Fire departments: the next frontier

The joint emergency medical services group of northern Ozaukee County will meet on Tuesday, April 25, to start tackling the second of its two priorities: consolidating fire departments.

The group already formed a partnership among the Fredonia, Belgium and Waubeka fire departments to pool resources in order to have a paramedic on call 24/7 in the three service areas with the costs to be covered by an Ozaukee County grant through 2025.

An intermunicipal agreement to contract paramedic service through the Village of Fredonia was approved by the towns and villages of Fredonia and Belgium.

The group, made up of elected officials from the four municipalities and the three fire chiefs, had mentioned multiple times that they intend to consolidate the fire departments as well.

The push to consolidate emergency services was sparked by increasing response times in Ozaukee County and the results of a study done by the Wisconsin Public Policy Forum. Finding volunteers to fill on-call positions has grown increasingly difficult.
