Fantastic Four
If the Cedar Grove-Belgium’s High School football team’s playoff-qualifying run was human, it could drive this year.
The Rockets reached 16 straight years making the postseason, which is among the longest active streaks in the state.
Port Washington is returning for its third straight season.
Ozaukee, after an off year last season, returns for the eighth appearance in the past nine years.
And, thanks to Grafton ending a 20-year drought, all four teams in the Ozaukee Press coverage area have qualified for postseason play for the first time.
Of the four teams, the Black Hawks have the fewest appearances, nine counting this season, but the most state titles with two, taking the 1981 and 1982 division 2 championships, according to the WIAA.
The Hawks were runners-up in 1977 and 1984 and have a 10-6 all-time playoff record. Their last playoff victory was in 1995, when they went 1-1.
Port has the most appearances with 21, including one division 2 championship in 1985 and runner-up performances in 1979, 1983 and 1990. The Pirates are 19-19 all-time in the playoffs, with their last win coming in 2008, when they went 2-1.
Before this stretch of three straight seasons of qualifying, the Pirates made the playoffs from 2006 t0 2008.
Port was a regular in the 1980s and 1990s, making it 1983 to 1985, 1987-88, 1990, 1992-93 and 1998-2001.
The Rockets have visited the postseason 18 times, the bulk of that in this millennium. They were division 5 state runners-up in 2008 and in 2016. Last year, they won three playoff games, missing out on a trip to state by two points in a heartbreaker.
The Rockets have a 23-17 record in the postseason.
This will be Ozaukee’s 17th trip to the playoffs. Their best run came in 2016, when they won two games before falling to St. Mary’s Springs, the division 6 powerhouse that has ended many teams’ seasons.
The Warriors are 7-16 all time in the playoffs.
What additions to be made to these four teams postseason legacies will be determined starting at 7 p.m. Friday.
Cedar Grove-Belgium hosts Howards Grove, and Grafton hosts Luxembourg-Casco. Port plays at Plymouth, and Ozaukee visits Mineral Point.
