Edmund Fitzgerald program highlights library events
A Badger Talks program on the Edmund Fitzgerald by the interim vice chancellor for research and graduate education at the University of Wisconsin Madison will headline the November events hosted by the Oscar Grady Library in Saukville.
Steve Ackerman, who joined the university’s Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences in 1992 and is one of the “Weather Guys” who discusses weather and climate on Wisconsin Public Radio, will present “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald: The Ship, the Storm and the Song,” from 5 to 6 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 16, in the library’s community room.
The program will examine the sinking of the freighter — perhaps the most infamous Great Lakes shipwreck, which claimed the lives of all 29 men aboard — in Lake Superior during a Nov. 10, 1975, storm from the perspective of the weather, ship and famous song by Gordon Lightfoot.
But to start the month, the library will present a webinar on protecting trees over the winter from 11 a.m. to noon on Wednesday, Nov. 8.
The program will focus on protecting young trees, which are particularly prone to damage, from wildlife and winter sun scald.
On Thursday, Nov. 9, the Recipe Club will indulge in cookies from 11 a.m. to noon.
Participants should bring their favorite cookies and the recipes to share.
To register, call the library at (262) 284-6022.
Also on Thursday, Nov. 9, the library will host a stamped and stacked autumn book craft project from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m.
Participants will make stamped books that will add to their home decor.
The library will present a webinar on the invasive spotted lanternfly from 11 a.m. to noon on Wednesday, Nov. 15.
Native to China and Vietnam, the insect was first reported in North America in Pennsylvania in 2014, has since spread through neighboring states and is poised to be found in Wisconsin.
The program will cover how to identify the spotted lanternfly, its biology and how to manage the insect, which gathers in larger numbers on a variety of plants and kills them.
On Saturday, Nov. 18, the library will host a Bug in a Rug Children’s Theater’s presentation of “Fairy Godmother’s (song) Book of Wisdom from noon to 1 p.m.
Fairy Godmother will tell tales of princesses real and imagined and share her knowledge of true royal powers — curiosity, courage, intelligence and kindness —while the audience sings along.
Young princes and princesses and their caregivers are invited to come dressed as royalty.
An adult book discussion on “Hamnet” by Maddie O’Farrell will be held from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the community room.
Reflecting the author’s fascination with the little-known story behind Hamlet’s play “Hamnet,” the acclaimed, emotional novel paints a portrait of a marriage and at its heart the death of a child.
Teenagers are invited to the library from 1 to 2 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 22, to make pet blankets.
The no-sew project will entail knotting fleece by hand to create blankets that will be donated to the Wisconsin Humane Society Ozaukee Campus in Saukville.
All materials will be provided.
The library will present a webinar on caring for indoor plants during winter from 11 a.m. to noon Wednesday, Nov. 29.
The program will focus on recognizing common pests on indoor plants and various management strategies.
The Oscar Grady Library is at 151 S. Main St.
