Dog hailed as a hero for alerting family to fire

A Grafton dog is being called a hero after it alerted its family to a fire in their garage.

During the early hours of Saturday, Sept. 2, the Grafton Fire Department was called to a garage fire in the village.

Firefighters were able to get to the scene within five minutes and “quickly extinguish the fire,” according to the department’s Facebook page.

Crews at the scene later learned from the family that their 1-year-old dog, Maverick, was the one to alert everyone that there was a fire.

Maverick’s quick thinking helped everyone in the home evacuate safely and unharmed, the department said.

The garage area of the home is heavily damaged and the cause of the fire remains under investigation.

The Saukville, Port Washington and Cedarburg Fire Departments assisted at the scene.
