Diving boosts Port Washington in pool battle

Diving continues to be a difference maker for the Port Washington High School swim team.

The Pirates on Saturday took second place in their five-team Pirate Invite, scoring 468 points. Burlington scored 537 to win, and Berlin was third with 403 points. Chilton scored 400 and St. John’s Northwestern 161.

The Pirates were the only team with divers, and their four scored 68 points. Without them, Port would have tied for fourth.

Cale theis won diving with 431.5 points. Garrett Friede scord 405.1. Roger Schmidt scored 398.1, and Austin Rinke scored 194.16.

Alex Sharbuno led the individual swim events by taking second in the 500-yard freestyle in 5 minutes, 35.76 seconds and third in the 200 freestyle in 2:04.43.

Wyatt Roller was third in the 50 freestyle in 25.64, and Neil Tumey was third in the 100 backstroke in 1:07.05.

The 200 freestyle relay team of Tumey, Cody Seitz, Roller and Shabuno was third in 1:41.46.

Two relays took fourth: the 200 medley team of Tumey, Chase Orvis, Sharbuno and Roller in 1:59.53; and the 400 freestyle team of Garrett Patterson, Peter Meier, Joseph Huebner and Mavrick Roller in 4:11.29.

Cody Seitz took fourth in the 50 freestyle in 25.66 and fifth in the 100 butterfly in 1:06.08.

Tumey was fifth in the 200 individual medley in 2:32.45, and Joseph Huebner was fifth  in the 100 freestyle in 59.73.

Correction: Sharbuno won the 500 freestyle against Nicolet on Dec. 6.

Grafton on Wednesday lost to Whitefish Bay, 112-69.

Nick Starr won the 200 individual medley in 2:04.56. Michael O’Connor won the 500 freestyle in  5:35.71. Gaven Depies won the 100 backstroke in 1:03.67. Nick Starr won the 100 breaststroke in 1:04.44.

The Black Hawks and Pirates were to swim and dive in the North Shore Conference relays on Tuesday and Port was to host Kiel at 6 p.m. Thursday.
