The Cedar Grove-Belgium School District has been granted a waiver from the State Department of Public Instruction to start the 2023-24 school year a day early.
Supt. Chad Brakke told the School Board last week that the waiver to start on Aug. 31 has been approved. State law allows schools to start Sept. 1 or later and requires a waiver to start earlier.
Electors in the district approved allowing the district to apply for a waiver last month, and the School Board also gave its blessing.
Brakke said the Thursday, Aug. 31, start allows teachers to have three workdays before students attend on Thursday and Friday before Labor Day weekend.
That schedule, he said, “happened this year and, in surveying the staff and administrators, worked really well.”
A special School Board meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 22, to approve the 2023-24 calendar.
