Dieringer loses to defending champ

Alex Dieringer lost his bid to join the U.S. team for the World Wrestling Championships last weekend.

He lost to defending freestyle world champion Kyle Dake at 79 kilograms in the Final X match.

In the best-of-three format, Dake won the first round, 3-2, and the second, 4-2, according to teamusa.org.

Dieringer is a 2011 graduate of Port High, where he won two state titles and took second once.

He won three NCAA titles at Oklahoma State and the Dan Hodge Trophy, the wrestling equivalent of the Heisman.

Dieringer’s last visit to Port was in May when he wrestled in exhibition matches against his former coach Angelo LaRosa and principal Eric Burke. Dieringer also ran a clinic for young wrestlers.
