The Fredonia Fire Department’s $2.3 million expansion is almost complete, and just in time for the department’s open house on Saturday, June 2.

According to the village’s Director of Public Works Roger Strohm, the project added 7,320 square feet to the firehouse, doubling the size of the facility. The last addition to the facility was about 40 years ago, he said.

“Everything went according to plan. There’s only some touchups for a few paint spots and landscaping should be finished this week,” he said. “The project is pretty much finished. We just have a few punch list items left.”

The expansion project, which began last August, was prompted by a lack of space for equipment.

“If we bought a new truck, it had to be specially made to fit through the garage doors because they were too small,” Strohm said. “When guys were getting their gear on for a call, they were literally touching the trucks that were ready to pull out.”

The addition features amenities such as training and meeting rooms, shower facilities and quarters for female personnel.

The Fire Department has eight female members and a total of about 40 members.

“We’re getting more female EMTs and firefighters so we need separate showers and stalls for the female force,” Strohm said.

The open house will begin at noon Saturday with the dedication ceremony followed by tours until 3 p.m.
