Data breach doesn’t affect district

While a breach of a major student information system compromised millions of students’ data across the country, the Cedar Grove-Belgium School District was not affected, Supt. Elizabeth Freeman told the School Board last week.

PowerSchool, one of two major players in the industry, had a breach on Dec. 28 that affected 62 million students.

Cedar Grove-Belgium uses the other major company, Infinite Campus, “which has been secure and safe all along,” Freeman said.

District Director of Technology Zone Vang checked with Infinite Campus to ensure safeguards are in place.

The district, Freeman said, implemented more safeguards as a result of the breach and worked to harden its infrastructure and keep its network and student devices safe. Staff has gone through additional training to detect anything that looks suspicious.
