Cutting down invasive plants

Volunteers and staff of the Ozaukee Washington Land Trust braved the snow and cold recently to cut down invasive buckthorn at Kurtz Woods on Acacia Drive in Saukville. Among the workers were OWLT Project Coordinator Christine Bohn (left photo) and Doug Frank (right photo). Buckthorn is an invasive species that when left untreated crowds out native plants. Fall and winter are good times to treat buckthorn because the plant is dormant, making it easier to remove and more susceptible to herbicide applications, officials said. Photos by Sam Arendt
