County hires firm to study new facility at Lasata campus
Ozaukee County supervisors on the Health and Human Services Committee voted Nov. 27 to award a contract of $8,000 to a Wauwatosa architectural firm to help locate and design a community based residential facility (CBRF) to add to the Lasata Senior Living Campus in Cedarburg.
AG Architecture was the lowest bid of three firms.
The firm would assist with pre-design services such as analyzing functions and space needs, estimating costs and projecting a construction time line.
County officials are looking at building a CBRF to create a “continuum of care” at Lasata that would fill a gap in care among its three facilities:
• The Lasata Care Center, a 136-bed rehabilitation and skilled-care nursing facility.
• Lasata Crossings, a 60-unit Residential Care Apartment Complex assisted living facility.
• Lasata Heights, a 60-unit apartment building for independent seniors over age 62.
Income from the Heights and Crossings help supplement the Care Center, where many patients are supported by Medicaid, which fails to cover costs of care.
A CBRF is defined as a place where five or more people live and where services include room and board, supervision, support services and some nursing care.
Although nothing has been approved, a Lasata CBRF would likely provide rehabilitation and memory care services, county officials say.
AG Architecture is expected to submit a report early next year that would give officials a better idea of where a CBRF would be located, how much it would cost to build and operate, and how it would be staffed.
That would provide more information for county supervisors to decide on whether to go forward or not with the project, officials said.
Last month, a market study prepared by consultant CliftonLarsonAllen concluded there is a market for a CBRF at Lasata.
It said the number of seniors 65 and older will continue to grow and that seniors in Ozaukee County are generally more well-off financially than in the rest of the Milwaukee metro area.
The study is paid for with revenues from Lasata operations.
