Close game turns to big Saints’ loss

The Cedarburg Mercs on Sunday broke open a close game late in defeating the Saukville Saints, 12-4, at Fred Dickmann Field.

The Saints jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning.

Steve Dickmann led off with a walk, and a sacrifice bunt by Mike Sherrick moved him to second base. A throwing error scored one run and advanced a runner.

Jimmy D’Angelo was hit by a pitch. An Aaron Brockman single brought in another run, and D’Angelo later scored on a wild pitch.

The Mercs scored two runs in the third inning. Two walks and a hit batter loaded the bases. A walk plated one run and a fielder’s choice scored the other.

The Mercs took the lead in the fifth inning. Sam Spaudes tripled and Sam Tomasek singled him home. An infield error sent a second run home.

Merc Grant Steinke led off the sixth inning with a home run to extend the lead to 5-3.

The Mercs scored two runs in the seventh inning. Two singles and a hit batter loaded the bases, and a Troy White single plated the runs.

The Saints answered with one run in their half of the seventh. D’Angelo walked and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Steve Dickmann singled him home to cut the lead to 7-4.

The Mercs pulled away with five runs in the eighth inning.

Mercs Troy White, Joe Daniels and Ayden Spykstra each had three hits.

Saints Steve Dickmann, Brock Henke and Aaron Brockman each had three hits.

The Saints went to 2-11. The Mercs are 5-8.

The Saints close their season Friday at West Side Park in Hartford against the 10-3 Hartford Hawks, co-leader of the Rock River League Northern Division. The game starts at 7:30 p.m.
