Champions then and now

The Grafton High School 2007 state title-winning girls’ basketball team was honored Feb. 4 at halftime of the Black Hawks’ girls’ game vs. Nicolet. The roster included Opal Albrecht, Shauna Binsfeld, Hilary Wellnitz, Halie Ziegler, Nicole Brandenburg, Eileen Bennett, Molly Pfaffenroth, Kim Korinek, Jackie Reif, Rachael Hencke, Sarah Eichler, Lindsay Wilde, Mary Kalies, Myranda Tyler and Kara Hanson. Coaches were Bob Maronde, Scott Maronde, Steve Nauta, Mark Brueggemann and Mike Bikman. The managers were Alex Elbe, Mike Kalies and Jordan Prohuska. The Hawks beat New London, 41-35, in overtime in the Division 2 state final in Madison. Hencke, who scored a game-high 18 points, forced a late jump ball and banked home a 10-foot jumper with five seconds left to tie the game at 33. In the semifinal, the Hawks beat Greendale, 54-52, thanks to two free throws by Wellnitz with 19 seconds left and a missed 12-foot jumper by Greendale at the buzzer. The team finished 11-3, good for second in the North Shore Conference, and 17-3 overall.
