The Cedar Grove-Belgium High School girls’ cross country team has its work cut out for it.

Big East Conference champion Karen Ibarra graduated, along with all-conference runners Grace Voskuil and Katie Mueller. They helped lead the Rockets to ninth place at the Division 3 state meet last season.

But coach Brandon Langer said this year’s squad is off to a good start.

Senior Anna Claerbaut, junior Cheyenne Simonet and sophomore Lyndsay Sass are back.

Freshman Faith Konzak could be one of the team’s top runners, Langer said, and junior Greta Beernink “is looking to build off a solid track season.”

Junior Sara Burns, senior Natalie Davies and newcomer Allie Jaworski could all contribute, he added.

The team has 11 runners.

Langer said he expects Oostburg and Ozaukee to be two of the top teams in the Big East.

For the boys, a couple of near misses are being used as motivation. They lost to Kohler by four points in a bid to four-peat as Big East champs, and missed out on qualifying for the state meet.

Among those lost to graduation are Big East first-teamer Quinn Hoopman and second-teamer Andrew Reichert.

Although they lost three of their top seven from last year’s team, “I am encouraged by what we have returning,” Langer said.

First-team all-conference runner Ben Fleuchaus returns for his senior season, along with second-teamer Nathanael Bruhn for his junior year.

With junior Logan Ketterhagen, Langer said he should have a “solid top three.”

Junior Wesley Reichle and sophomores Cole Ketterhagen and Alex Nett return with varsity experience, “and I expect them to take a large step forward this fall,” Langer said.

Senior Jac Gasser, he said, looks good after a solid summer of training and could be a pleasant surprise.

The team has 14 boys.

“This group, along with the rest of our returning runners and a strong group of freshmen, look to reclaim the conference title,” Langer said.

Among those in the likely mix for a trip to state are Brillion, which was third at state last year, Kohler (seventh), Manitowoc Lutheran and Sheboygan Lutheran, Langer said.
“If the boys continue to work hard and push each other, I like our chances,” he said.
The Rockets begin their season Thursday at Lincoln Park Golf Course in Milwaukee. They run at Tendick Park in the Town of Saukville on Friday, Sept. 6.
