Cedar Grove-Belgium High School girls’ basketball coach Abi Lucas is thankful her team recovered to win two games in the Denmark Thanksgiving Tournament last weekend, but she wishes one didn’t last quite as long.
The Rockets lost at Big East Conference foe Sheboygan Lutheran, 65-47, on Nov. 26. They went 0-for-15 on three-pointers and 15-for-59 (25.4%) on two-pointers.
Sophie Beightol scored 11 points and went 7-for-8 on free throws as well as grabbing five rebounds. Olivia Bahr and Aubrey Marti each scored 10 points. Bahr had six rebounds and five steals, and Marti had seven rebounds and four steals. Gracie Schmidt had nine points.
“They have a really strong defense and we lost our composure for a few minutes. They push the ball up the floor pretty well. They definitely set the tempo for that game,” Lucas said.
“The shooting did not help.”
Last Friday, the Rockets beat Two Rivers, 62-31, in the Thanksgiving tournament.
They jumped out to a 37-11 lead by halftime.
Marti scored 18 points on 6-for-8 shooting from the field, including 5-for-6 on threes, and made six steals.
“That second half she went off. She really stepped up and just let it go,” Lucas said of Marti’s shooting.
Bahr had 11 points, 15 rebounds, four assists and three steals. Schmidt scored 12 points on 5-for-6 shooting and grabbed six rebounds. Beightol had 10 points, five rebounds and three steals.
Last Saturday, the Rockets had Denmark beat but fell behind by one point late.
Bahr was fouled with less than three seconds to play, and she missed the first free throw. She made the second to tie the game at 58 and send it to overtime.
The Rockets then took over, outscoring Denmark, 12-7, for a 70-65 victory.
Beightol was the game’s star, scoring 29 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. She went 10-for-11 on free throws and shot 8-for-15 from the field.
“In overtime, Sophie stepped it up. She took the ball to the hole and made her free throws,” Lucas said. “And she played excellent defense.”
Bahr had 19 points and nine rebounds, shooting 7-for-15 from the field. Marti scored nine points and Grace Konzak had eight.
The Rockets, 3-2, host Oostburg on Thursday, Dec. 5, and play at Ozaukee on Monday, Dec. 9.
Ozaukee suffers first loss of season
Visiting Howards Grove beat Ozaukee, 51-34, on Nov. 25.
Ozaukee shot 9-for-42 (21.4%) from the field and 14-for-28 on free throws.
“We did have an off shooting night, especially compared to our first two games of the season. Savannah Quade played well for us on Monday night. She has shown more confidence this season already,” coach Linda Weyker said.
Ozaukee hosts Random Lake on Thursady, Dec. 5, before visiting Cedar Grove-Belgium.
