Cedar Grove-Belgium High School football coach Dan Schreurs got about what he was hoping and expecting Friday night at Kohler/Sheboygan Lutheran/Christian.

New quarterback Michael Navis, who switched to the position from receiver last year, ran 10 times for 106 yards and a score, and went 7-for-11 passing for 96 yards and two touchdowns in a 37-8 victory.

“It was pretty much what we expected out of him. He was able to roll out and read the field.  When he was open he ran it, when he had open receivers he threw it,” Schreurs said of Navis.

Junior tailback Alex Acevedo ran for 126 yards and a score on 25 carries.

“He was patient getting to the hole and then he turned it on. He either ran it through you or did a move and got around you,” Schreurs said.

Max Ford used his height and speed to catch three balls for 57 yards and two touchdowns.

On defense, all-conference linebacker Ben Anzia led the team with 12 tackles and a sack.

“Great effort by him and the whole defense. Other than one play, they really dominated and really wore down their offense,” Schreurs said.

The Rockets took an early lead on a 6-yard pass from Navis to Ford.

KLC got on the board in the second quarter with a 23-yard touchdown pass on a double move. A two-point conversion put the Rockets behind, 8-7, but that was all the scoring they would allow.

The Rockets added two more touchdowns in the final 150 seconds before halftime to take control of the game.

“We felt the momentum shift at that time. The energy and excitement was on our side,” Schreurs said.

The second score was a diving catch by Ford for 32 yards. Schreurs said Navis fired the ball 45 yards through the air.

“I had to eat my words that I didn’t know if I had a quarterback who could throw the ball 40 yards anymore,” he said.

Navis scored on a 25-yard run in the third quarter on a play-action rollout. All three receivers blocked as Navis weaved his way to the end zone.

Acevedo added a 16-yard score in the fourth quarter. When the defense began keying on him, fullback Chris Jentges took advantage with 55 yards on nine carries.

Despite being outsized by anywhere from 20 to 40 pounds, the Rockets won the battle in the trenches.

“They controlled the line of scrimmage all night long,” Schreurs said of his offensive line.

The Rockets lost all-conference defensive end Chris Daniels to a knee injury. They hope to get him back soon.

The Rockets held the Blue Bombers to  5-for-17 passing for 88 yards, and to 69 yards rushing.

On Friday, the Rockets host Mishicot for their home opener at 7 p.m.

“They have a very aggressive defense. They like to bring three linebackers at any given time. It will be interesting to see how we handle that type of pressure,” Schreurs said.

Offensively, he said Mishicot runs a variety of formations and sets, making preparation a challenge.
