An early lead and intense finish led Cedar Grove-Belgium High School’s soccer team to its second victory of the season last Thursday at Howards Grove, 3-2.
The Rockets took a 2-0 halftime lead on goals by William Lautenschlaeger and Matt Voskuil.
Ashanti Olofintila extended the lead with a goal early in the second half.
The Tigers answered with two scores, “but the guys were able to withstand the pressure” to hang on for the victory, coach Elias Garza said.
“Securing a win on the road was gratifying, especially against a team this program has not had much recent success against,” Garza said.
“The atmosphere was intense, particularly late in the second half. I credit these young men for staying positive and encouraging one another.”
The Rockets, now with two wins on the season, were to host Sheboygan Christian/Lutheran on Tuesday and winless Ozaukee in a makeup game at 7 p.m. Thursday.
The Rockets, a No. 18 seed in the Division 4 tournament, play at No. 15 Random Lake at 4 p.m. Tuesday.
Grafton has two near misses
Grafton missed out on several opportunities in losing to Kohler, 1-0, on Oct. 8.
The Black Hawks, coach Don Arnold said, gave up a bad goal when a defender missed a ball bouncing up in the air and a Blue Bomber shielded it from the goalkeeper and scored.
The Hawks still outshot Kohler, 10-3.
“It was not our best performance by any means,” Arnold said.
Against powerhouse Nicolet last Thursday, the Hawks lost, 4-3.
“The whole mentality, excitement and desire — it was a whole different world,” Arnold said.
Max Stilb gave the Hawks the lead two minutes into the game on a 30-yard shot.
“After that, you could see the excitement. They gave everything they had,” Arnold said.
Tanner Marien put the Hawks up, 2-0, on an assist from Nate Wagner in the 11th minute.
The Knights tied the game by halftime.
Wagner gave the Hawks the lead in the 60th minute on a 30-yard free kick, but the Knights answered a few minutes later and got the winner in the 84th minute.
“On Tuesday we looked like an average team and on Thursday we looked like a bunch of champions,” Arnold said.
The Hawks played at West Bend West on Tuesday and play at Kettle Moraine Lutheran at 4 p.m. Friday.
The Hawks got a No. 8 seed in the Division 3 tournament and host No. 9 Port Washington at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 24.
Port hangs with Whitefish Bay
Whitefish Bay may be undefeated in the North Shore Conference, but visiting Port Washington made the Blue Dukes earn their victory last Thursday.
The Pirates took the Blue Dukes to the limit before losing, 2-1.
“We kind of had to weather the storm a little bit. Sometimes, Bay comes in with a little mystique and we had to convince ourselves we could play with them,” coach Sean O’Brien said.
The Blue Dukes scored early, but Thomas Garant drew the Pirates even 12 seconds before halftime.
O’Brien said Garant put a good strike on the ball from about 25 yards out and it took a weird deflection. The goalkeeper ended up going the wrong direction as the ball went into the net.
The Blue Dukes scored the game-winner in the 65th minute.
“Our positioning was good. Our defensive play was solid,” O’Brien said. “They didn’t have a whole lot of dangerous looks but had plenty of possession (time).”
Goalkeeper Cale Theis, he said, played the best game of the season.
“He was seeing the ball really well and he made some pretty outstanding saves that kept us in it,” O’Brien said.
Port was to host Hartford on Tuesday and Milwaukee Carmen at 5 p.m. Thursday before the playoffs.
Ozaukee lost, 7-1, at Roncalli/Two Rivers last Thursday. After the Rockets, the No. 19-seeded Warriors play at No. 14 Faith Christian on Tuesday, Oc. 22.
