CG-B soccer nears league title
The Cedar Grove-Belgium High School girls’ soccer team is two victories from school history.
If the Rockets beat Howards Grove on Thursday and Kohler on Friday, they win their first Big East Conference title.
Last week, The Rockets beat one conference opponent and two non-league foes. They won at St. Mary Central, 3-0, on May 14.
Coach Elias Garza said Abby Kraus scored two first-half “clinical goals” on penalty kicks, and Shelby Cooney scored a “cheeky second-half” goal on an assist from Kraus that was a “sight to behold.”
The Rockets hadn’t beaten the Zephyrs in several years, Garza said, and won the physical battle.
“St. Mary Central is always a well-coached team who generates pressure on the flanks as well as slotted through balls in their opponents’ defensive third (of the field),” Garza said.
The Rockets outshot the Zephyrs, 18-10. Goalkeeper Brooke Braga made nine saves.
Last Thursday, the Rockets beat Division 3 powerhouse Sheboygan Falls, 4-3.
After falling behind 2-0, Kraus scored twice and Cooney once to make it 3-2 at halftime.
The Falcons tied the game, but the Rockets scored with five minutes to play. Haven Minick booted an “inviting corner” kick that Ellie Felsinger chested into the back near post.
Kraus, Alex Mentink and Cooney each had an assist.
“It was a good experience tonight that had a hint of a postseason atmosphere. The team didn’t panic despite the early deficit and responded well,” Garza said.
Braga had five saves. The Rockets outshot the Falcons, 20-10.
“We know what we can improve on and those things will be addressed during film and training. I have faith in these young ladies that the events that led to the goals for Falls will be avoided,” Garza said.
The Rockets, 11-0 in the Big East and 13-1 overall, won via forfeit over Valders last Friday. They were to play at Roncalli on Tuesday, at Howards Grove (2-5-1 in the Big East) on Thursday and host Kohler (8-1-2) at 7 p.m. Friday. They earned a No. 1 seed and host No. 16 Valders at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 30, to open the Division 4 playoffs.
Grafton goes 1-1 in North Shore contests
Grafton knocked off Hartford, 3-1, on May 14 before losing, 4-0, at powerhouse Whitefish Bay last Saturday.

“It’s good to have adversity and not panic,” coach Don Arnold said of the early deficit.
He called Whitefish Bay (7-0 in the North Shore Conference) “a quality team.”
Arnold praised Brianna Rapp for her play in back and at midfield and Abbie Schad for moving to center back after Kenzie Schultz injured her back.
“Even when they saw that conference championship slipping away, the girls never stopped fighting,” he said.
The Black Hawks, 5-1-1 and third in the NSC behind Bay and 6-1-1 Nicolet, hosted Port Washington on Tuesday and play at Slinger on Thursday. They earned a No. 3 seed in the Division 3 tournament and host No. 14 St. Anthony on Thursday, May 30.
