Celebrating an icon in jail literacy

Nina Walker, who in 1992 co-founded the Ozaukee County Jail Literacy Program with Judy Johnson, was honored by the program Saturday with a special honor — the classroom the program uses at the Ozaukee County Jail will be named after her. Ozaukee County Sheriff Christy Knowles (above right) showed Walker the plaque that will hang over the classroom door. The honor was bestowed on Walker during the Jail Literacy Program’s annual benefit and auction, held at the Cedarburg Cultural Center. Katherine Nemetz and Jon Wallenkamp (lower photo) checked out the auction items during the event.   Photos by Sam Arendt
