Cedar Grove soldier to speak on March 17

Larry Sohre, a decorated combat infantryman who served on the front lines of the Vietnam War, will be the guest speaker for the Monday, March 17, meeting of the Metropolitan Milwaukee Military Historians.

The 6:30 p.m. meeting will be at the Rose-Harms American Legion Hall, 1540 13th Ave., Grafton.

Cedar Grove native Sohre, who was a member of the First Cavalry Airmobile Division, often led his unit as the point man on high-stakes air-to-ground patrols deep in enemy territory.

Sohre, who served in 1970-71, has curated an extraordinary documentary combining slide and motion film footage sourced from multiple archives to create a visual journey on the realities of the Vietnam War.

The event will also feature Sohre’s personal photo slides capturing moments of camaraderie, hardship, and resilience.

He will also discuss the moment he came face-to-face with an enemy patrol, where his split-second decision saved his entire platoon, earning him the Bronze Star with the rare “V” for Valor.

The evening will conclude with a salute to the First Cavalry Airmobile Division showcasing large photo slides of each fallen soldier, complete with their name, birthdate and hometown.

The $25 admission fee includes a buffet dinner by Out and Out Catering and the speaker’s presentation. A limited number of seats are available for the speaker’s program for $10.

Doors to the Legion Hall open at 5:15 p.m.
