Boats that float and others that don't highlight Venetian Fest

People gathered at the Port Washington marina Sunday for the Venetian Fest cardboard boat regatta took photos as a replica of the Oliver H. Smith — the flagship fishing tug of Port’s bygone Smith Bros. commercial fishing operation — was launched by (from left) Grant Smith, Mike Burmesch and Jereme and PJ Klopp. The cardboard version of the tug was built by three generations of the Smith family after Grant Smith came up with the idea and enlisted his sister Tori Smith Klopp and her family in the effort. The 14-foot boat, which won the People’s Choice and the Last Boat Floating awards, was held together with 1,186 feet of duct tape and a gallon-and-a-half of glue. Photo by Sam Arendt
