Board approves pavilion upgrades for Veterans Park

The Grafton Parks and Recreation Board recently approved plans for a new look to the pavilion in Veterans Memorial Park.

The $75,000 project will include aesthetic upgrades and renovations to the pavilion that begin this year and are anticipated to be completed by May 2020.

Documents show the upgrades will include replacing surrounding asphalt with concrete, replacing siding and lighting, repainting the wood ceiling and decorating external posts with block veneer and capstone.

Plans also call for relocating service windows, installing rolling metal doors in the serving spaces and a steel countertop.

“It’s going to be nice. It’s going to look like a whole new pavilion,” Parks and Recreation Director John Safstrom said during an April meeting.

The Architectural Review Board reviewed the plans last week and the village will begin the bidding process for the project in June and July.

During the April meeting, members discussed how the renovation will impact the serving spaces because the pavilion is used for the Grafton Lions Club’s annual chicken roast and a number of other annual events.

Committee member Tom Krueger said that because plans reconfigure the service windows, the altered counter length may cause problems. But Safstrom said the new design was not intended to limit the service area and his main concern was to create an affordable project for the park.

Safstrom said the committee can make minor changes to the project without resubmitting plans and the Lions Club and other groups can provide further input.

Construction for the project is expected to begin in September.
