Berens dedicates first late model victory to his mother

Tom Berens outdueled Jeff Holtz in the 50-lap Uptown Pro Late Model main event Sunday afternoon at the Slinger Speedway to capture his first career feature victory in the division.

“Jeff (Holtz) gave me an awesome run, and this one’s for my mom,” an emotional Berens said from victory lane in reference to his mother Christine, who was a fixture at the speedway every week until she passed away a little over a month ago after battling cancer.

Berens thanked his family, crew and sponsors as he continued the celebration after shot-gunning a beer with his fan club, the Section G Shotgunners who cheer the team on from Section G of the grandstands.

Holtz battled Berens side by side throughout the event before having to settle for second while Zach Prunty finished close behind the lead duo in third place. Zach Braun was fourth and Jerry Eckhardt was fifth, followed by Tyler Hromadka, Jacob Vanoskey, Billy Braun, Del Schuler and Jeremy Bentz.

ν Hromadka and Holtz were the winners of the Uptown Pro Late Model heat races while Ryan Gutknecht was the fastest qualifier after completing a lap in 12.216 seconds.

ν Andrew Meyerhofer took advantage of an intense lead battle between Dale Lecus Jr. and Brian Holtz to slip by both of them late in the 35-lap sportsman feature and claim the victory. Lecus finished second just ahead of Holtz while Paul Wagner and Tom Elsinger Sr. rounded out the top five.

Dave Teske and Ryan Sielaff were the winners of the sportsman heat races and Brian Holtz set fast time with a lap in 12.798 seconds.

ν Al Strobel won the Finish Line Sales and Services Super Beez 25-lap feature over fastest qualifier Paul Reagles. Todd Buckley finished third followed by Scott Hackbarth and Brandon Tackes.

ν Super Beez heat races were won by Brandon Tackes and Todd Buckley. Paul Reagles was the fastest qualifier at 13.751 seconds.

ν Mitchell Strobel topped the 25-lap Siding Homz Slinger Bees feature after battling Brandon Mennicke and Misty Benn, who finished second and third respectively. Tom Elsinger Jr. finished fourth and Carl Benn was fifth.

Strobel and Brian Stanczyk won Slinger Bees heat races. Benn was the fastest qualifier with a lap in 15.205 seconds.

ν Colin Stocker won the 25-lap Great North Legends main event over Tim Brockhouse and Jacob Tiegen. Jesse Mahoney was fourth, and Tyler Ledbetter was fifth.

Tim Brockhouse won the Great North Legends heat race and also was the fastest qualifier with a lap of 13.819 seconds.

ν Ayrton Brockhouse drove to victory in the 15-lap Johnson and Sons Paving Bandolero feature, taking the win ahead of Alex Hartwig and Lincoln Cain. Axel Oldenhoff was fourth and Jayden Johnson was fifth.

Mark Anderson and Ayrton Brockhouse were the winners of the Bandolero heat races while Alex Hartwig was the fastest qualifier with a lap of 14.62 seconds.

ν Scott Goetzke won the Figure 8 race after leader Ryan Lovald connected heavily with Bill Shavlik in the “X” to bring an early end to the event. Both drivers emerged from the mishap uninjured.

Racing resumes Sunday, May 22, at 2 p.m. People are allowed to race their street cars.
