Belgium hosts annual Luxembourg Fest

The annual celebration of Luxembourg heritage and culture in Belgium was held last weekend, featuring fun for all ages. From the top photo, family members Gertrude Juckem Wenig Kabat, 88, (left) Joseph Juckem, 98, and Marjorie Juckem Schwoerer, 91, whose roots trace to Eppeldorf, Luxembourg, were honored at the fest. Cory Dimmer of Dacada won the treipen-eating contest. Maryann and John Mahowald of St. Cloud, Minn., were chosen as the duchess and duke. Marie Fieber fed her grandson Samuel, 1, some of Luxembourg’s famous blood sausage. Jim Jolly held his daughter, Emmy, 1, as she got acquainted with the lion from the Luxembourg coat of arms. One parade entry featured people donning blue smocks called kittels, the traditional farmer shirts in Luxembourg, as they walked sheep to depict the Hammelsmarsch, the traditional procession in rural communities.
