Playing a day earlier than usual didn’t bother the Grafton High School football team last Thursday.

The Black Hawks scored touchdowns on its first two offensive plays, the second aided by a Tyler Heinle punt block, and cruised to a 53-6 victory.

Jack Nelson started the game with a 47-yard kick return to the Rockets’ 40-yard line. Brady Hilgart promptly hit Gavin Lempke down the seam for a 40-yard score on first down.

After forcing a punt, Heinle broke through and blocked the kick, which rolled 16 yards backward to the Rockets’ 4-yard line.

Tommy Lutz took it in on first down, and it was 14-0 129 seconds into the game.

Lutz added a 10-yard score off left tackle later in the first quarter, capping a 58-yard drive.

After the Rockets got on the board with a touchdown, the Hawks kept scoring. Hilgart flipped to Jeremy Dickerson Jr. on the move for a one-yard score, and Heinle later sacked the quarterback, causing a fumble in the end zone. Jayden Smith-Kaylor jumped on it for a Hawks’ touchdown.

Hilgart later hit a wide open Ian Cornelius on wheel route for a 24-yard touchdown, and Lutz ran for an 18-yard score with less than 30 seconds to play in the first half. He shed a tackle in the backfield with help from offensive lineman Thomas Petersen, then raced down the right sideline untouched.

Noah Anderson hit a 29-yard field goal for the only points of the second half.

Lutz had 121 yards rushing and three scores on 11 carries. Hilgart went 5-for-10 passing for 117 yards and three scores.

Graysen Bollech had an interception, and Cameron Javoroski led the team in tackles with four.

The Hawks have outscored their first three Woodland conference foes, 145-47.

The Hawks, 4-1 overall, play at Greenfield (2-1 Woodland, 3-2 overall) on Friday. Greenfield handed Grafton its only conference loss last season on a last-second play, 29-28.
