The Ozaukee High School baseball team’s offense did just enough and its defense shut down and shut out Mishicot on May 25 to remain unbeaten.

Senior Simon Bares scattered five hits over six innings, whiffing six and walking three, in a 5-0 victory.

“Simon’s been doing well,” coach Steve Kowalkowski said.

“Matt (Miller) or Simon have gone some deep innings for us. Noah (Miller), if called on, is ready to go.”

Noah pitched the seventh, striking out two batters and inducing a popup.

The Warriors jumped out to a lead in the top of the first inning.

Noah singled to center and stole second. Bares knocked a single to right that scored Noah. Matt Miller then shot a line-drive double to left field that plated Bares.

The game stayed 2-0 until the sixth inning.

Noah hit a double, and Matt was walked intentionally with one out. Natalie Miller, Matt’s sister and Noah’s cousin, reached on an error to load the bases.

Talen Dybul then “had a shot to left field” that scored Noah and Matt.

In the seventh inning, Noah tripled and Bares hammered a single to left to score him.

The team, Kowalkowski said, handled the 70-minute drive one way well.

“The kids stayed focused. It was a clean game but it was a battle the whole way,” he said.

The Warriors were error free and the Indians committed one.

Noah went 3-for-3 with a double and triple. Matt was 2-for-2 with one RBI, two walks and scored a run. Bares was 2-for-4 with two RBI and scored a run. Dybul was 1-for-4 with two RBI.

“Noah had a really good game,” Kowalkowski said. “Talen Dybul came through with two RBI to open it up.”

For the Indians, pitcher Devin Posvic contained the Warriors, allowing four runs (three earned), six hits and three walks while whiffing three in 5-1/3 innings.

Nick Wagner came in and allowed one earned run on three hits, whiffing three.

“We just couldn’t hit their starting pitcher. He went deep,” Kowalkowski said.

“We were kind of hitting it where they were. We were getting solid contact, just couldn’t stretch a couple of plays together.”

The Warriors, 9-0 in the Big East Conference and 10-0 overall, were to play at Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah (1-8 Big East) on Tuesday before a showdown with second-place St. Mary Catholic (8-1) at 4:30 p.m. at home on Thursday, which may decide the league title.

But Kowalkowski said that’s not on the team’s mind.

“The kids have been great at staying forcused for the next game,” he said.

Last Thursday’s home game against Manitowoc Lutheran (6-3) was postponed due to rain. The game will be played at 4:30 in Fredonia on Monday, June 7.
