Backpacks filled with school supplies were given to almost 400 children last week as part of a countywide effort by several churches, businesses and community organizations to help children heading back to school this fall.
Because of concerns related to the Covid-19 virus, a drive-up system was instituted at Parkside Community United Church of Christ in Saukville on Thursday, Aug. 20, to maintain proper distancing and keep contact to a minimum.
In the past, parents and children were allowed to come through the church and pick out what they needed. This year, each backpack was preloaded with items and organized by grade.
Backpacks were also distributed on Friday, Aug. 21, at Lumen Christi Catholic Church in Mequon.
Sponsors of the event included Family Promise of Ozaukee County, Salvation Army, Port Washington State Bank, Kohler Credit Union, Parkside Community UCC, Lumen Christi Catholic Church, United Way of Northern Ozaukee, the Saukville Community Food Pantry and St. Vincent DePaul Port Washington.
More than 50 volunteers helped sort donations and items that were purchased on Aug. 17 and placed the backpacks on Aug. 18.
