Appointing clerk and treasurer to go to vote

The Town Board on Monday unanimously voted to adopt an ordinance to appoint the town clerk and treasurer rather than have the positions elected.

The ordinance will be put on the November ballot for town residents to decide.

“It’s the toughest job in any town government,” Town Chairman Tom Winker said of being clerk. “We so appreciate what Anne (Nord) does.”

Besides the Town Board favoring the change, Winker said, Nord also supports it.

“More and more towns across the state are doing that just because you can’t find a good clerk or treasurer,” Winker said at the May Town Board meeting.

On Monday, Winker said the town will have to make another adjustment if the vote on the ordinance passes.

“If she (Anne) stays on, we’re going to have to look at raising her pay,” he said.

“She’s going to offer us a number and hopefully it’s something we can all agree on.”
