Annual VFW poppy drive will be held May 17, 18

The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5373 and its auxiliary will hold their annual poppy drive on Friday and Saturday, May 17 and 18.        Members will offer poppies and collect donations at Drew’s True Value in Port Washington, Walmart in Saukville and Fox Bros. Piggly Wiggly in Port and Saukville held from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The red poppy is a symbol from World War I memorialized in a poem written in 1915 by John McCrae about Flanders Field, Belgium, where in 1914 American soldiers were engaged in battle in the fields of poppies that grew there.
The poppy distribution is generally held around Memorial Day, with donations used for various veterans causes.
