Officials again vote to appoint trustee’s wife to board

For the second time in three weeks, Pamela Duckart has been appointed by the Saukville Village Board to fill a vacant trustee seat.

Ozaukee Press questioned Duckart’s appointment at the board’s May 16 meeting, noting that the meeting’s agenda did not state that an appointment could occur that night. The village then noticed the matter on this week’s agenda.

“Under Wisconsin law (the appointment) did not follow public notice,” Brad Hoeft, village attorney, said. “It should be considered invalid.”

Library to kick off summer reading program, host full calendar of events

The Oscar Grady Library in Saukville will kick off its summer reading program for children, teenagers and adults with a sign-up event from 2 to 4 p.m. Thursday, June 13, that includes ice cream and games.

Community meal to be held on June 10

A community meal will be held at Parkside Community Church in Saukville from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, June 10.

The meal, provided by A Place To Be Spirituality Center in Saukville, includes sloppy joes, pasta salad, fruit and desserts.

In-person and to-go meals will be available.

The  Ozaukee Food Alliance sponsors the meal.

Village joins Port in opposing DOT Hwy. 33 plan

Saukville Public Work’s Committee joined the Port Washington Board of Public Works recently in opposing a Wisconsin Department of Transportation plan to reduce the number of traffic lanes on the stretch of Highway 33 connecting the  communities.

The DOT has proposed reconfiguring the four-lane stretch of Highway 33 between Saukville and Port by dedicating one lane in each direction for bicycle use only in 2027 when a portion of the road is resurfaced.

A perfect day to mark Memorial Day

She was joined in the parade by a color guard, Scouts from Pack 3868 and the Landt-Thiel American Legion Auxiliary. From too many volunteers to dire staffing shortage

After a half-century of providing emergency medical services, the Saukville Fire Department’s ambulance service, like others in Ozaukee County, is facing a dire shortage of EMTs and paramedics.

It wasn’t that way when Saukville EMS, which is marking its 50th anniversary this year, was founded.

Village Board tries to appoint member’s wife

A divided Saukville Village Board voted to appoint the wife of one of it’s members to fill a vacant trustee position during a fiery meeting last week.

But after the 3-2 vote was questioned by Ozaukee Press, village officials determined it was invalid because the agenda for the May 16 meeting allowed the board only to decide on a process for filling the vacancy, not make an appointment. The board is expected to reconsider the matter at its next meeting.

Saukville takes a trip back in time

Crossroads Rendezvous took people back in time last week to the days when fur traders plied the Milwaukee River and made their livings on its bank in areas that included what is now the Village of Saukville. Clockwise from top: A group of Grafton students learned how animal hides were used to make clothing and other items during the event’s student day on Friday, May 19. Jim Brennfleck taught teacher Amanda Lucht how to throw a tomahawk. Students got a look at a wooden canoe like those used by traders.
