Commission clears way for Gateway apartments

Just a month after the Village of Saukville approved its 99-acre plat, the Northern Gateway Apartments has been given the green light by the village’s Plan Commission to move forward with its multi-family complex.

This approval, according to Ian McCain,  design construction manager for Ansay Development, is “a great jumping-off point for the project.”

The commission included contingencies that must be met before beginning the project.

Columbarium could pay off for cemetery, village

Union Cemetery could soon feature a columbarium, an above-ground granite structure that houses hundreds of urns.

The Saukville Village Board began seeking bids for its construction last month in the hope the project will offset the cost of maintaining the cemetery.

“Union Cemetery is the responsibility of Saukville. It is supposed to be self-sustaining,” Trustee Trevor Seitz, who presented the board with the plan, said. “It should not be a burden on the taxpayer.”

Treasure hunters

Town to take another stab at internet grants

Town of Saukville officials will again seek grants that would pay for supplying all town residents with high-speed internet access, which many rural households in Ozaukee County lack.

Town Chairman Kevin Kimmes said Tuesday the town plans to apply for $2.2 million in grants in October or November, with $1 million coming from Charter Communications and $1.2 million from the state. The town would ante up $200,000 in matching funds.

The town applied for a similar grant last year but lost out to other communities.

Charter Steel set to break ground for solar field

Charter Steel is expected to break ground this month on a 60-acre solar array at its Saukville plant that will provide 8% of the power used at the facility.

The array will be located on fields Charter owns north and west of the plant, and is expected to be operational by May 2024, Director of Environmental Rob Thompson said.

“It will be a long process. The supply chain has impacted things,” Thompson said, noting the lead time for electrical components such as the inverters is significant.

Wizards, witches and muggles turn out for Harry Potter Fest

Characters from the wizarding world of Harry Potter descended on Pioneer Village in the Town of Saukville Saturday, July 29, for the fifth annual Harry Potter Festival. Among the many Harrys in attendance was William Hendrick (far right), who looked as if he was ready to cast a spell outside the Pioneer Village trading post. Mandi Hawk and her nephew Isaiah Zastrow made friends with a rather hairy beast (right). Live at the Triangle has people flocking to park

Saukville’s Veterans Park, formerly Triangle Park, was the place to be on a warm Wednesday night last week as Shad Lads took the stage for a Live at the Triangle concert series performance. Mary Van Treeck (above) was among those enjoying themselves as Mark “Mopey” Wildhagen (right) and his bandmates played. The free concert series, which is celebrating its 15th anniversary, continues with shows from 7 to 9 p.m. on Aug.

Library has plenty of programs on tap this month

The Oscar Grady Library in Saukville will kick off its August programs with a summer reading wrap-up celebration from noon to 1 p.m. Saturday Aug. 5.

The all-ages event will be held on the library patio and feature music by Rockin’ Leonardo.

Other youth programs include aquatic insects exploration with the Community Rivers Program from 10:30 a.m. to noon on Tuesday, Aug. 8.

Man charged with gun crime after traffic stop

A 39-year-old Saukville man who is prohibited from possessing firearms because he is a felon is in trouble with the law again after he was pulled over with a handgun in his vehicle.

In addition to possession of a firearm by a felon, Daniel D. Petz was charged last week in Ozaukee County Circuit Court with two counts of felony bail jumping and misdemeanor counts of operating a vehicle after his driver’s license had been revoked and violating a court order by not having an ignition interlock device installed on his vehicle.

Fall book sale set at Oscar Grady Library

A fall book sale will be held at the Oscar Grady Library from Wednesday to Saturday, Sept. 13 to 16.

The fundraiser sponsored by the Friends of the Oscar Grady Library will be held in the library community room during regular library hours.

  Proceeds will help fund the summer reading program and other library programs and needs.
