Joint fire department hinges on referendum

The Village of Saukville is one step closer to consolidating its fire department with Grafton’s after the Village Board  on Tuesday unanimously agreed to move forward with a funding referendum.

The resolution authorizes the village to hire a consultant to educate the public on what the referendum would mean for each municipality and to take a “holistic look” at what the Grafton and Saukville fire stations would need in a consolidated department.

Dreaming about being a firefighter

Kicking off Fire Prevention Week, the Saukville Fire Department held an open house Sunday that in addition to teaching people how to stay safe may have helped recruit the next generation of firefighters. Fire minor but a reminder during fire prevention week

A fire at a duplex in the Village of Saukville last week caused little damage, but served as a reminder during fire prevention month of what could happen, Grafton’s Assistant Fire Chief Matthew Karpinski said.

The cause of the fire, which was reported around 5:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 6, is still under investigation but Karpinski said nothing about the fire was suspicious.

The fire reportedly started on the exterior of the house.

No injuries were reported from the fire.

Donations sought to help woman hurt in fire

Donations are being sought for next month’s fundraiser at J’Sports Bar for Dawn Boeselager.

The event runs from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 4, and includes auctions, raffles, food and beverages.

People may donate items or money by contacting Debbie Bruggink at debbie_phillips625@yahoo.com.

Boeselager, a Saukville resident who founded and runs TailWaggers 911 dog rescue in Grafton, was burned when she fell into a fire pit on July 31 and is still in the hospital.

Community meal to be held Saturday in Saukville

A community meal will be held at Parkside Community Church in Saukville from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 14.

The meal will be provided by Pilgrim United Church of Christ in Grafton.

In-person and to-go meals will be available.

The  Ozaukee Food Alliance sponsors the meal.

Saver of lives now fighting for her own

Dawn Boeselager has dedicated her life to helping man’s best friends live safe, happy and healthy lives, but now she needs assistance herself to do just that after a freak accident over summer.

Boeselager, the owner of Tailwaggers 911 in the Town of Grafton, was on the phone with her friend Debbie Bruggink when she went to put out the fire in an outdoor fire pit at her Saukville home on July 31. She moved a log and, after a few dogs ran by, lost her balance and fell backward into the fire.

Man charged with berating, threatening, spitting at cops

A 34-year-old man who authorities suspect was drunk when he crashed his pickup truck on Highway 33 in the Town of Saukville Sunday afternoon has been charged in Ozaukee County Circuit Court with berating, threatening to kill and spitting at officers.

Neenah resident Carson L. Nelsen, who faces a litany of felony and misdemeanor charges, is also accused of damaging a squad car door and breaking a hospital monitor.

Fire Department to hold open house Saturday

The Saukville Fire Department is set to host a  fire prevention open house this weekend.

The open house will run from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. this Saturday, Oct. 9, at the Saukville Fire Department, 520 W. Dekora St.

The event will be host to a plethora of events, including fire truck rides, a coloring contest, an obstacle course, a car fire demonstration and tours of the fire house.

“We are hoping for a nice turnout from the village. It will be a great place for the whole family to stop by, have some fun and learn about fire safety,” Saukville Fire Chief Bill Rice said.

Library to host storytimes for kids, events for teens and adults

The Oscar Grady Library in Saukville will host storytimes throughout October as well as a number of other programs for people of all ages.

Morning storytimes, which are held from 10:30 to 11 a.m. Tuesdays through Oct. 31, give children ages 2 to 5 and their caregivers the opportunity to enjoy rhymes, songs, dancing and stories.

Families are invited to evening storytimes from 6:30 to 7 p.m. Wednesdays through Nov. 1.

Children can come dressed in their pajamas and bring their favorite stuffed animals to hear a story and sing songs before bedtime.
