It wouldn’t be wrong to call Joan Rooney the grande dame of Milwaukee Street.

The 91-year-old woman, who recently moved to NewCastle Place in Mequon, lived almost all of her life in the stately house at 739 N. Milwaukee St. that her parents built when she was just 3.

To say Rooney has seen the neighborhood — and the city — through her years would be an understatement.

After all, when she moved into the house, neither the We Energies power plant nor St. Alphonsus Hospital, which is today the home of Harbor Campus senior living, had been built.

Flood victims tell committee city is ignoring their concerns

Several people whose houses were flooded last August told the Port Washington Board of Public Works Tuesday that they feel like their concerns are being ignored and they beseeched the panel to take measures to prevent any future flooding.

“After eight months, there doesn’t appear to be a detailed plan. I need this done now,” said Dave Ross, who owns a duplex at 240-242 N. Spring St. “I’m in urgency mode. I’m having a tough time getting tenants or selling the property.

“I’m asking for this process to be sped up. This problem has not been solved. I don’t get it.”

Port council clears way for city’s largest subdivision

The Port Washington Common Council on Tuesday paved the way for construction of the city’s largest subdivision on the city’s southeast side, approving a final plat and a change in zoning for a portion of the Prairie’s Edge development.

Ash borer’s spoils give rise to a house

Jason Lane and his friend Brian German drew a crowd on Moore Road in Port Washington recently. The pair had set up a portable sawmill and were transforming large trees killed by the emerald ash borer into timbers destined for a home Lane plans to build.

“There were about 10 guys who came by to watch,” Lane said. “They said, ‘This is awesome. I have to watch you for a while.’

“And there was some rubbernecking as people drove by.”

He and German milled several 10-by-10-foot timbers, Lane said, noting it was an accomplishment.

Sale of trailer park land hinges on new TIF district

The City of Port Washington is taking the first steps toward creating a new tax incremental financing district that will encompass one parcel of land — a former trailer park that will be used for senior housing.

Horizon Development, which last year proposed using the land off South Spring Street for a 40-unit, three story apartment building for people ages 55 and older, has obtained the needed tax credits for the project, City Administrator Mark Grams said.

“They are going to be going ahead with the project,” Grams told the Plan Commission recently.

Town to raze one house, authorities to repair another

At the same time, the Ozaukee County Sheriff’s Office is working to repair damage to the neighboring house done during a recent training exercise when percussion grenades caused windows to crack and break, town officials said.

Town Chairman Jim Melichar said Monday the incident occurred about two weeks ago when the Sheriff’s Office was training with Milwaukee County officials.

Keeping Port’s lakefront safe with Infos

In preparation for the summer swimming season, Port Washington officials last week formally opened the Infos system at north beach. The system offers people on the beach real-time information about rip currents and lake conditions to help them determine when it’s safe to get in the water.

Port panel calls for new west-side firehouse

Port Washington’s fire station task force met Monday to finalize its findings for the city’s Police and Fire Commission, recommending after three months of study that the city should construct a new firehouse that is estimated to cost $4 million to $6 million on Grand Avenue west of Highway LL.

But the breakneck speed of the task force may slow down in the coming month as it presents its findings to the Police and Fire Commission and Common Council, which will not only have to decide whether to move ahead with the project but also how to fund it.

Officials ask Evers to revisit marine sanctuary plan

Port Washington Mayor Marty Becker and Tourism Executive Director Kathy Tank, along with officials from Sheboygan, Manitowoc and Two Rivers, met with Gov. Tony Evers in Madison last week in an effort to resume the process of creating a national shipwreck sanctuary that would stretch along the Lake Michigan Coast from Ozaukee County north to Two Rivers.

Becker said he was encouraged by the meeting, noting Evers “seemed very receptive.”

Getting their hands dirty and loving it

Students at Thomas Jefferson Middle School in Port Washington got a hands-on lesson in the environment last week as they helped plant more than 400 seedlings under the supervision of a city crew.

The seventh-graders got down and dirty as they planted, teacher Kelly Evenson said, “and they loved it.”

“The kids were saying, ‘I love getting my fingers in the dirt,’” she said. “They came back with muddy clothes, but they were so excited about what they did.

“They really take pride in this.”
