Revamped Bags 4 Buczek fundraiser debuts Saturday

Bags 4 Buczek, the largest cornhole tournament in Ozaukee County, will be back this year bigger and better than before, organizers said.

That’s because this year, for the first time, the tournament will be held in conjunction with Mel’s Charities.

“It’s grown into something pretty spectacular,” Bags 4 Buczek founder Gary Knaub said.  

The tourney will move from Veterans Memorial Park to Harbor Hills Recreation Center on Port Washington’s west side on Saturday, Sept. 18, which will give the teams more room to spread out, Knaub said.

Divided Port council settles on new time for meetings

The Port Washington Common Council will meet at a new time starting next month.

Aldermen recently agreed to begin council meetings at 6:30 p.m. on the first and third Tuesdays of each month instead of the current 7:30 p.m.

It was a compromise move made after several aldermen objected to a proposed 6 p.m. start time, saying that would make it difficult if not impossible for officials and residents who work in communities such as Milwaukee to attend meetings.

Crash claims life of woman, injures daughter, son-in-law

An 89-year-old woman died hours after a Town of Port Washington crash Saturday afternoon that left her daughter and son-in-law critically injured.

Nelda Bartz died at 5:21 p.m., two hours after a car collided with the sport utility vehicle she was riding in with her daughter Jeannie Noll, 64, and son-in-law Dale Noll, 62, on Highway KK not far from the home the family shared on Willow Road, according to the Ozaukee County Sheriff’s Office.

The crash occurred just days before Bartz’s 90th birthday.

Port High AD nets a final gold

Nate Hinze has gone out with gold.

The three-time Paralympic wheelchair basketball player from Cedar Grove and Port Washington High School athletic director helped the USA win the gold medal at the Tokyo games in his final competition.

Hinze, 33, said he would retire after these games and is comfortable with his decision.

“It sunk in that this was the last one probably about a week into the trip. It’s just a long time to be gone from the kids,” he said, adding he was away from his wife and three children 6 and younger from Aug. 11 to Sept. 6.

Harbormaster explores marina expansion as waiting list grows

Port Washington Harbormaster Dennis Cherny is looking into the possibility of expanding the marina by another 14 slips off pier five.

Cherny said his plan calls for adding 14 slips for 30-foot boats — the size most in demand at the marina — to pier five at the far north end of the marina.

Using pier five rather than having to build another pier, he said, is key to the plan.

“That’s about the only place we can find space without moving piers around,” Cherny said. “We can’t do that (move piers).”

Port dumps Waste Management, hires new hauler

The Port Washington Common Council on Tuesday dumped Waste Management as its trash and recycling collector and instead hired Harter’s Fox Valley Disposal.

“This is going to make us very popular if it works out well,” Mayor Ted Neitzke predicted, reflecting the frustration city officials and residents have experienced since November, when Waste Management bought out Advanced Disposal and took over the city’s contract. “We’re all at our breaking point.”

“This might be the most important PR move you make,” Ald. Mike Gasper told City Administrator Tony Brown.

Driver who hit Port cyclist charged with homicide

A 76-year-old Cedar Grove man accused of continuing to drive after becoming dizzy and suffering double vision has been charged with causing the death of a 72-year-old bicyclist from Port Washington after hitting him with his sport utility vehicle on Highway LL in May.

Council OKs $70,000 study to help plot city’s course

The Port Washington Common Council on Tuesday took another step toward creating a strategic plan for the community, hiring a Minnesota firm to conduct the process.

Mindful that studies often sit on shelves, Mayor Ted Neitzke said, “They’re not going to give us a binder to collect dust on department heads’ desks.”

The study, he said, will not only help create vision for the city for the next three to five years, it will also include action items that officials can be held accountable for.

Aldermen irked by early closing of fish station

The fish cleaning station at the Port Washington marina will be closed beginning on Thursday, Sept. 16, and construction of a new facility will begin shortly after that, Port aldermen learned Tuesday.

But the fact that the fish cleaning station will close so early didn’t sit well with some officials, who argue that fishermen continue to ply the waters into fall.

Decorated boats light up the night, draw a crowd to Port’s lakefront

Scores of spectators flocked to Port Washington’s Coal Dock and Rotary parks just after nightfall Sunday to watch the Venetian Night boat parade, one of the stars of which was the sailboat Karma, owned by Brian Kendzor, which was decorated to look like a giant freshwater shark (above).
