Farmers market with a long history to open Saturday

Port Washington’s farmers market, one of the oldest such markets in the area, will open the 2021 season Saturday.

The market, which is held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on East Main Street between Franklin and Wisconsin streets, will have a range of early produce such as peas, lettuce and herbs, food products like dips and soups, flowers, honey and baked goods, Port Main Street Inc. Executive Director Kristina Tadeo said.

Flavored lemonades, elderberry products, fresh eggs and meat will be for sale, she said.

Minnesota man is pick to lead PW-S District

After deliberating for hours during three closed meetings, a divided Port Washington-Saukville School Board on Monday offered the job of superintendent to David Watkins, one of several administrators who are second in charge of St. Paul Public Schools in Minnesota.

Watkins, 51, accepted the job on Tuesday and will take the helm of the Port Washington-Saukville School District in July.

War medal mission accomplished

When four members of the Werner family gathered at the World War II Memorial in Port Washington’s Coal Dock Park Friday, it marked the end of a seven-year journey for the family.

Bill and Linda Werner of Port Washington and his brother George and his wife Colleen of Slinger were waiting for Sen. Tammy Baldwin so they could thank her and her staff for their work in securing three medals, including the Bronze Star, that had been earned by their father William but never received.

“That’s what this is all about, giving him his recognition,” Bill said.

Port High ballplayer punished for racial slur

A Port Washington High School junior  varsity baseball player who uttered a racial slur during a May 24 game against Nicolet High School was suspended from several games and had to write a letter of apology to the school and participate in a peer mediation program run by the school’s multicultural club, Principal Thad Gabrielse said.

Water plant fix could mean ‘huge’ rate increase

Port Washington water utility customers could be facing as much as a 45% increase in water rates by 2024 to pay for $15.3 million in needed improvements to the water plant, the Board of Public Works learned Tuesday.

That increase is “huge,” Tom Nennig, president of City Water, a consultant for the project, told the board. “That is a major impact for a lot of people.”

There are some steps the city could take to mitigate the increase, Nennig said, such as implementing a 3% rate increase next year or capping the utility’s annual payment in lieu of taxes to the city. 

Port bicyclist, 72, dies of injuries suffered when he was hit by SUV

Robert Bley, the 72-year-old Port Washington bicyclist who was struck from behind by a Jeep Compass while riding on Highway LL in the Town of Port Washington on May 17, died Tuesday, June 1, of his injuries.

Bley died at Froedtert Hospital in Wauwatosa of injuries he suffered in the accident, according to Captain Marshall Hermann of the Ozaukee County Sheriff’s Office.

Bley, a native of Port Washington, was an avid bicyclist who rode his bike throughout the area and the state.

A graduation worthy of not one but two celebrations

Members of Port Washington High School’s Class of 2021 celebrated graduation on Sunday not once but twice, first with a ceremony in the school gym, then with a vehicle parade through downtown. Although the ceremony was held indoors, graduates waited until they were outside in the school courtyard to toss their caps (top photo). During the ceremony, a proud Josh Bongiorno (top right) flashed his diploma.

Pandemic peregrines get some bling

Port Washington’s three peregrine falcon chicks are sporting some bling this week.

The chicks each received two bands, one for each leg, during a banding event at the Port power plant last Thursday, along with a name selected to honor what We Energies called the heroes of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Port’s two female chicks were named Harvest, in honor of farmers, and Cheers for restaurant and bar workers while their brother was named Hugs to honor parents and guardians.

Port-Saukville School Board meets again but makes no pick for superintendent

The Port Washington-Saukville School Board emerged from another closed session Wednesday without selecting the district’s next superintendent.

The board was expected to choose one of two finalists for district’s top job — Joe Koch, deputy superintendent of the School District of Waukesha and a 1997 Port Washington High School graduate, and David Watkins, who as chief of school is second in charge of St. Paul Public Schools in St. Paul, Minn. — but did not for reasons Board President Brenda Fritsch would not comment on.

Port joins others in rescinding mask rule

The Port Washington Common Council, which just two months ago passed a resolution requiring masks be worn in city buildings, on Tuesday rescinded that rule and joined a growing number of governmental entities and private businesses that are relaxing Covid-19 protocols as the area emerges from the pandemic.
