Celebrating the reason for the season

‘The Little Show’ winners announced

The winners of The Little Show, the Cedarburg Cultural Center’s annual juried exhibit and sale, have been announced.

Mike Zierke of Onalaska received the Best of Show award, which includes $300 and an invitation for a future solo show at the center, for his polychromos pencil and pastel work, “Resting Bull Study.”

Kathleen Irons Sweeney of Cedarburg received the second-place prize of $200 for her fiber artwork, “Across the Lake.”

The third-place award of $100, was given to Alba Cobos of Georgia for her embroidery on canvas artwork, “Magenta.”

Area students earn degrees from UWM

December 18, 2024

Seventeen area students graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee on Sunday, Dec. 15.

  Bailey Arndt of Belgium graduated from the College of Letters and Science with a bachelor of arts degree.

Grafton students graduating from the Sheldon B. Lubar School of Business with bachelor of business administration degrees were Grady Bauer, Laurelyn Pritzlaff, Katharine Sewart and Robert Walters.

Brenna Cooke of Grafton graduated from the School of Education with a master of science degree.

Helping animals while becoming an Eagle (Scout)

December 11, 2024

Andrew Williams of Saukville (inset) became an Eagle Scout with projects intended to help the animals at the Milwaukee County Zoo. Andrew, 16, led two teams of volunteers this summer, one of which built stairs for the outdoor otter passage, making it easier and safer for staff members and the animals to traverse the otter exhibit, and the other to revitalize the enrichment garden at the Small Mammals building.

Leading the Kiwanis Club in 2025

The Greater Port Washington Kiwanis Club gathered last month to install its officers for the coming year. They include (from left) Secretary Karen Oleski, Treasurer and President Elect David La Duke, Past President Eric Hill and President John Sigwart. The club has been active in the community for 87 years.        

Ushering in the season with Santa and shopping

The fifth annual Christkindlmarkt was held Saturday, Nov. 23, at the Van Ells-Schanen American Legion Hall in Port Washington and while shopping was the lure for many there was no bigger attraction than Santa Claus, portrayed by Jim Johnson, who posed for a photo with 20-month-old Emma Balzer. Shoppers enjoyed finding a variety of unique offerings, such as the copper items that (top right photo) copper artist Karl Kiehnau showed to Wendy Maechtle or the home decor sold by Kristen Bentrup (lower right photo). The market was sponsored by the Legion and its Auxiliary.

Celebrating her 104th birthday

Lasata Crossings resident Eunice Leemon celebrated her 104th birthday at the assisted living facility in Cedarburg on Nov. 25 with a tiara on her head and balloons, cards and flowers decorating her door. Leemon, who was born in Kaukauna, was asked about the secret of her longevity and said she always appreciated and celebrated faith, family and friends. Her advice to others is to always be kind.

Clay sculptor is center artist of the month

Sculptor Sarah Hunt-Frank is the December artist in residence at the Cedarburg Cultural Center.

Hunt-Frank is an admirer of Japanese art and design that incorporates the subtle suggestion of an image with a few simple strokes and the delicate balance of a vessel and the elegant sweep of a design.

In high school, she attended art classes at Herron School of Art in Indianapolis and classes at Purdue University. Hunt-Frank earned degrees in art and theater at Ball State University, and she has been a professional theatrical scenic designer and scenic artist for 30 years.

A host of giving for Thanksgiving

It is the season for giving, and many area businesses and organizations are focusing on ensuring that people have a holiday feast. Schmit Bros. auto dealership in Saukville recently donated 100 turkeys each to the Food Pantry Inc. of Port Washington and Ozaukee Food Alliance in Saukville. (From left in top photo) Jim Schmit of the dealership  stopped at Bernie’s Fine Meats in Port to drop off turkeys to Marcia Nosko and Joyce Brost of the Port Food Pantry. 4-H club honors three of its own, welcomes slate of new officers

The Knellsville 4-H Club recently honored three of its members for their accomplishments during the last year by presenting Outstanding Achievement Awards to (from left in photo above) Ryan Wewel and Jadyn and Adelyn Assmann during a meeting at First Congregational Church in Port Washington. The club also welcomed its new officers, who are (from left in photo below) Renata Commare, secretary; Brody Goeden, treasurer; Jadyn Assmann, president; and Alexa Melichar, historian.
