LETTER: Native Americans’ objection to mascot is reason to give it up

To Ozaukee Press:

Delegates from the Wisconsin Association of School Boards voted last week against supporting a ban of Native American mascots. As a former member of the Northern Ozaukee School Board, I am disappointed in their decision.

Let’s take a look at the Northern Ozaukee warrior. How do we know he’s an Indian? Mohawk haircut—check. Feathers—check. Exaggerated nose—check. If the NOSD mascot were a caricature of an African American, replacing it would be a no-brainer.

LETTER: Shorthanded dairy farmers need visa help for immigrant workers

The economy is humming and most people who want a job have one. This is great news. If you are an employer with positions to fill, though, things aren’t so great. The struggle to find workers is especially hard on the farms that underpin our rural communities.

That is why approval of the Farm Workforce Modernization Act in December by the House of Representatives was incredibly important; now the Senate needs to consider this farm labor reform.

We wish to say thank you to the Ozaukee Press, reporter Joe Poirier and photographer Sam Arendt for the kind article about the Port Washington Historical Society that was featured in Transitions magazine in last week’s Press.

It surely is a passion and love of history that motivates us. We continue to be an organization of volunteers ready to welcome others to fill a variety of roles at all three buildings, whether at the Resource Center, the 1860 Light Station or the Port Exploreum.

LETTER: Facts dispute claims made in letter praising Trump record

After reading Kathy Broghammer’s letter to the editor in last week’s Ozaukee Press (“Democrats should be happy with what Trump has done for them”), I reviewed the facts and found the following:
• As reported by Time magazine, the average tax cut per week for most Americans was $20 (not quite a weekly tank of gas), compared to $2,384 per week for the top 1% (about 80 tanks of gas).  

LETTER: Referendum rejection showed need to keep watch on board

I attended the Jan. 15 Ozaukee County Board meeting to listen to the debate over Resolution 19-40, which would have placed an advisory referendum on the April ballot asking voters if future redistricting maps should be created by a nonpartisan committee.

PHOTO OP ED:Storm winds blow and a rising lake threatens Port Washington shore facilities

What’s missing from the photo above? The answer is the concrete breakwater on which the Port Washington lighthouse sits. It was underwater when the picture was made on Jan. 9, not as a result of waves breaking over the lighthouse, but because the lake level had risen higher than the breakwater. The already record-high lake was pushed up along the shore by strong southeasterly winds.

KUDOS: Polar Bears basked at new venue in above-freezing water and air

To Ozaukee Press: We would like to say thank you to everyone who was involved with the 2020 Polar Bear Plunge. The conditions were just right, with an air temperature of 41 and water temperature of 36. The water cool enough to wake you up and wavy enough to make it interesting.

LETTER: Ozaukee voters want a voice in a fair redistricting process

To Ozaukee Press:
    A proposal to authorize a referendum question on redistricting state and congressional voting districts is on the Ozaukee County Board agenda for this week.
      The time is now for the County Board to finally step up to the plate and give most residents what they would like to have—an opportunity to vote in an environment not jaded by a corrupt district map created for the sole purpose of a predicted outcome.
