Robots, students take center stage at high-tech expo

Soldier is coming home at last

Grafton’s Roy Harms, who was killed in an ill-fated World War II battle on Aug. 1, 1943, will be buried in his hometown on Saturday, May 6.

It will be a poignant homecoming for Harms, whose remains were interred in Europe for decades. They weren’t identified as his until last August, surprising family members who for years had held out hope they might be identified and returned home.

School leader accused of ‘skip scanning’ faces felony

A top administrator in the Mequon-Thiensville School District and former Grafton middle school principal has been charged in Ozaukee County Circuit Court with stealing $864 in merchandise over the course of about five weeks from the Meijer store in Grafton.

Kevin J. Deering, 41, who left his job as principal of John Long Middle School in Grafton to become the executive director of educational services for the Mequon-Thiensville District last year, was charged with one count of felony retail theft last week.

Testimony wraps up in police officer disciplinary hearing

Testimony in a disciplinary hearing before the Grafton Police and Fire Commission wrapped up Monday morning.

Three commission members are hearing a misconduct case against Sgt. Justin Lawrenz brought by Police Chief Jeff Caponera, who is seeking to fire Lawrenz.

Lawrenz was the only person to testify Monday in a hearing that lasted through the morning, Commission Chairman Paul Moroder said.

A disciplinary hearing against Grafton Police Sgt. Justin Lawrenz, who is accused of misconduct in office, will continue Monday, April 17, before the Grafton Police and Fire Commission.

Following the completion of testimony, the commission is expected to deliberate and consider what action to take.

The hearing was prompted by an 11-count complaint that outlined incidents dating back to 2021 and was filed by Chief Jeff Caponera, who is asking that Lawrenz be fired.

Police continue to investigate report of attempted child abduction

Grafton police continue to investigate a report that a 7-year-old boy was asked by a man to come with him in exchange for candy while in a bathroom at Costco on Friday, April 7.

The investigation, however, is complicated by the fact the boy said he heard but never saw the man and by a 45-minute delay in reporting the alleged incident to authorities, according to Grafton police.

“Because of the time delay and the lack of a description of the suspect, it made the on-scene investigation more complex,” Sgt. Sean Fuerstenberg said.

Library book sale opens this week

The Grafton Public Library will hold its Big Spring Book Sale from Thursday, April 13, through Monday April, 17.

The sale, which will be held in the lower level meeting room, will start at 9:30 a.m. every day and run until 7:30 p.m. on April 13, 4:30 p.m. on April 14, 2:30 on April 15, and 7:30 p.m. on April 17.

Monday, April 17, is half-price day.

The sale will feature fiction and nonfiction titles as well as DVDs, CDs and audio books.

The library will also accept donations of gently used materials, although no nonfiction books 15 years or older.

Resource Night to be held April 18 in Grafton

An Ozaukee County Resource Night to provide community resources available to children, teens and adults who receive special education services will be held Tuesday April 18.

The event will run from 4:30 to 6:30pm at Grafton High School.

Those attending are asked to use Door 18.
