Port library sets October activities

October activities for adults at the Niederkorn Library in Port Washington have been announced.

A career planning workshop will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. on the first Tuesday of the month by Emily Smith, human resources consultant from Ansay & Associates.

Smith will provide one-on-one assistance with career planning needs, help with resume reviewing, interview preparation, job searches and applications and other topics.

People may drop-in or register for an appointment.

The D&D Group PW Bookwyrms will meet from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesdays.

Fundraiser set for Root and Branches

Roots and Branches’ annual Garden Party will be held at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 26, at the Prairie Center in West Bend.

This year’s theme will be “Boots and Ranches,” and it will feature local celebrities who will compete for live auction items.

The event will also include a country band, barbeque with all of the fixings, silent auction, raffle prizes and a spirit and wine ring toss.

Tickets are $50 or $375 for a table for eight. They may be purchases online at https://www.rootsbranches.org.

Parenting program to begin on Oct. 4

A free parenting program for the parents of children ages 2 to 10 will be held from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesdays from Oct. 4 to Nov. 15, at Ozaukee Family Services.

The course is an evidence-based parenting program designed to promote the social, emotional and academic success of children.

Participants will learn ways to help prevent, reduce and treat emotional challenges in children through a positive and nurturing approach.

Crunchy crisp apples reflect fall on a plate

One of the most delicious fall fruits is apples.

This crisp, crunchy fruit is ideal to eat on its own or in salads, but is also delicious cooked in entrees, side dishes and sauces, and baked into desserts.

Try apples and pork for a classic dinner combination, or apple crisps and pies for a delightful end to a meal. Applesauce is a fall tradition, as is apple cider.

Special gardens are the ones that reflect the gardener

If you’re starting to have deja vu when looking at gardens, you’re not crazy. Gardens do seem to be looking a lot alike, and it’s not a good thing, even when they are beautiful.

The homogenizing of home gardens might be blamed on social media, where many new gardeners go for inspiration, and rightfully so. Gardens that get a lot of traction on a platform are shared over and over again.

Whenever Melissa Anewenter falls off her surfboard or skateboard, she is quick to get back on and keep going, a metaphor for the 22-year-old’s frightening and fascinating journey through life so far.

A perilous childhood had Anewenter growing up in a campground with her father for nine years, then running away from what she said was a bad situation at home when she was 15 to secretly live with her grandparents, spending one night in a Chevy Impala and time in a boyfriend’s mother’s spare office and a year living with a best friend.

Lakefront an ideal setting for rare cars

About 150 cars of all kinds, colors and ages graced the Port Washington lakefront last month in what may become an annual event.

Proceeds from the inaugural Concours Auto Show at Coal Dock Park benefited Mel’s Charities, a nonprofit organization that holds events throughout the year for various Ozaukee County causes.

Art show award winners announced

The Cedarburg Cultural Center has announced the winners of the Cedarburg Artists Guild’s annual juried exhibit, which was juried by David R. Becker and Coletta Odya Smith.

The judges selected the works of art to be included in the exhibit as well as the ribbon winners.

The Best of Show award was presented to Landon Naffin for his colored pencil drawing, “It Comes with Age.”

Singer/Songwriter Series announced

The Wisconsin Singer/Songwriter Series has announced its 2023-24 concerts.

Each concert begins at 7:30 p.m. at Unitarian Church North, 13800 N. Port Washington Rd. in Mequon.

Doors to the church open at 7 p.m.

On Friday, Sept. 22, the series will kick off with a show by Tom Paxton and the Don Juans. Tickets are $30 in advance, $35 at the door and student tickets are $12.

John Stano will perform on Saturday, Oct. 7. Tickets are $20 in advance, $25 at the door and student tickets are $12.

Quick breads ideal for cool-weather treats

Quick breads are a tasty way to warm up meals — and the house — on cool days.

They can be sweet or savory and are ideal for everything from a morning breakfast to an afternoon tea to an evening snack.

Unlike yeast breads, which take hours to rise, quick breads are made with leavening agents such as baking powder and baking soda that rise quickly.

Almost all quick breads have five basic ingredients — flour, baking powder or soda, eggs, some type of fat, such as butter, oil or shortening, and milk or other liquid — that are pantry staples.
