Program to offer tips on handling autism

Strategies and tips for managing autism is the topic for a 6 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 21, program offered by Ozaukee Family Services.

The program will offer an introductory understanding of autism, including what it is and when to get help, as well as common intervention strategies for home, school and therapeutic environments.

These strategies include tips and tricks regarding possible school interventions, ideas for advocacy within IEPs or 504 plans, strategies to effectively navigate daily home life and recommendations for parent coping and self-care.

Nominations taken for first responder award

State Rep. Rob Brooks, R-Saukville, is accepting nominations for the 60th Assembly District’s First Responder of the Year Award.

The award program was established in 2019 to highlight the work Wisconsin’s first responders do every day to keep communities safe.

Past local recipients include former Saukville Fire Chief Gilly Schultz in 2019 and Port Washington Police Officer Tony Becker in 2021.

Nominees can be police officers, sheriff’s deputies, firefighters or EMS personnel that exemplify community service, selflessness and dedication.

CGB High Class of ‘74 plans reunion in 2024

The Cedar Grove-Belgium High School Class of 1974 is planning its 50-year reunion for next year.

Class members will meet on Sept, 7, 2024, for the event.

Even an admitted summer lover can’t miss the subtle signs that fall is on its way. Trees are showing the slightest blush of autumnal color, the days are rapidly shortening and the floral stars of late summer are at their peak.

Special of the day is a birthday surprise

It wasn’t a surprise for Tessa Egerer to celebrate her 21st birthday in Nashville last month. She and her family had booked the trip a year in advance.

The shock came in the number of coworkers from Plier’s Full Circle restaurant in Port Washington that joined her.

Tessa figured out something was up a few days before the trip when she was emailed a waiver to ride the Nashville Tractor, similar to Milwaukee’s Pedal Tavern only on a wagon being pulled by a tractor. She saw colleagues’ names on the list.

Taking time to smell the flowers

The weather was ideal Saturday as people gathered to enjoy the flowers and foliage in six Port Washington gardens that were part of the Port Garden Walk. About 250 people toured the gardens, which included a variety of plantings and hardscapes. Judi Deutsch (left photo) stood in front of a raised bed filled with dahlias, a flower she calls her obsession. Deutsch and her husband Steve spent 10 years designing and planting their gardens.

Taking a hike for veterans

It was a perfect day for a hike Saturday, and a number of area residents took the chance to do just that and raise money for Camp American Legion in the process. A group of World War II re-enactors joined organizers for a photo (photo above) at the start of the Bike and Hike for Vets that traversed the Ozaukee Interurban Trail from Port Washington to Kyotes Bar & Grill in Belgium. The event was sponsored by Legion posts 82, 410 and 412 and their auxiliaries.

For plants on the ‘out’ list, it’s auf wiedersehen

Late summer is a good time for garden observation. Most garden chores involve watering dramatic plants in containers that have become too small as their roots grow to fill the pots and deadheading to keep the flower show growing. Fortunately both of these jobs allow for a lot of looking around.

Cedarburg grad, Army vet to speak

  Thomas Deits, a 1964 Cedarburg High School graduate and veteran of the Vietnam War, is the speaker for the Monday, Sept. 18, meeting of the Metro Milwaukee Military Historians.

Deits, who lives in Madison, earned a degree at the University of Wisconsin Law School before joining the Army.

After training at Fort Campbell, Ky., Deits went overseas with the First Infantry Division “Big Red One.” Arriving in February 1969, he fought for a year, often as point, and was awarded the Combat Infantry Badge, Bronze Star and, after being twice wounded, the Purple Heart.

Grafton student earns summer honors

A Grafton student has earned honors for the summer semester at Southern New Hampshire University.

Andrew Wilkin was named to the president’s list at the Manchester, N.H., school.

Students named to the list have a grade-point average of 3.7 or higher.
