Breakfast with Santa set for Dec. 16 in Port

Breakfast with Santa will be held at First Congregational Church in Port Washington from 8 to 11 a.m.

Santa will be on hand for children to talk to and pose for photos with from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m.

Games, crafts and other activities will be part of the event.

Breakfast will include pancakes, eggs, ham, milk, orange juice and cocoa.

The price is $12 for adults and $10 for children 9 and younger. There is no fee for children 2 and younger.

Packages of Hope to help foster children

The fourth annual Packages of Hope holiday drive to benefit foster children is being held through Dec. 24.

A Package of Hope is a backpack of items to help a child feel safe in a stranger’s home.

People may buy a backpack and fill it with items for a child of the age and gender of their choosing. Children of all ages, from 1 to 16, are in need of items.

Suggested items include pajamas, toiletries, a book, toy and nightlight.

Illuminate Ozaukee light show opens Dec. 1

The fourth Annual Illuminate Ozaukee, a drive-through holiday light show, will take place on Friday and Saturday evenings in December at Zeunert Park in Cedarburg.

The event will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Dec. 1 and 2, 8 and 9, 15 and 16, and 22 and 23.

Admission to the park at N25 W5598 Taft St. is free but a $10 donation will be requested per vehicle.

Plots along the Illuminate Ozaukee path will be numbered to allow those attending to vote on their favorite plot.

Nature's money man

Andrew Struck unfolded his lawn chair on the grass late in the evening and settled in.

This wasn’t to enjoy music in the park or some other entertainment.

It was to witness the construction of a bridge over I-43 that connects the Ozaukee Interurban Trail from Trail Bridge Park to the other side. Work caused the freeway to close for several hours.

“It literally took them all night. I was camped out here with a lawn chair in October,” Struck said while sitting at a picnic table in the park.

Helping to build homes with food fare and a little flair

A crowd of people came out to support Habitat for Humanity Ozaukee and sample food and beverages prepared by 11 restaurants, breweries and distilleries during the organization’s Fare & Flair event held Nov. 11 at the Ozaukee Nonprofit Center in Grafton.

Stolp earns notable Land Trust award

Tom Stolp, executive director of the Ozaukee Washington Land Trust, received the 2023 Land Trust Professional of the Year Award from Gathering Waters: Wisconsin’s Alliance for Land Trusts.

The award was presented during the Land Trust’s Cocktails for Conservancy event in West Bend on Nov. 9.

Stolp has been instrumental in the years-long process to conserve the Clay Bluffs Cedar Gorge property in Port Washington.

Coloring contest to determine tree lighter

The Port Washington Parks and Recreation Department is seeking a youngster to light the city’s Christmas tree, and it is holding a coloring contest to decide who that will be.

The award-winning design will also be featured on Mayor Ted Neitzke’s Christmas cards.

All entries must be completed by children ages 12 and younger following a holiday theme.

The artwork must be created on an 8-1/2-by-11-inch piece of paper, and each design must include a tree.

Kids2Kids Toy Drive accepting donations

Kapco’s 18th annual Kids2Kids Toy Drive  is accepting donations of new, unwrapped toys and donations as it kicks off the 2023 collection.

  This year’s effort is led by a 20-person student leadership team comprised of students from Port Washington, Grafton, Cedarburg and Homestead high schools who are responsible for helping generate donations, business sponsorships and connecting with youths to highlight the power of positivity and giving back.

Christmas at the Legion to be held on Dec. 2, 3

The annual Christmas at the Legion in Saukville will be held from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 2, and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 3.

The event is sponsored by the Landt-Thiel American Legion Auxiliary, which will be selling holiday bakery, homemade crafts and a soup and sandwich lunch.

There will also be the annual Christmas corner specials.

Zone change is big news, but don’t go ripping out the garden

When the  USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map was updated for the first time in 11 years last week, I shared the news of our new zone — 6a — with Mr. Much More Patient, who certainly wasn’t as interested in the update as every gardener I know.

“Well, rip out all the plants. I guess we have to get all new ones now,” he said, tongue firmly planted in cheek.

Rest assured, fellow gardeners, no such action is necessary.
