Tickets on sale for Empty Bowls on Nov. 3

The 12th Annual Empty Bowls event will be held from noon to 1:30 p.m.  Friday, Nov. 3, at Grafton High School.

The event is a fundraiser for Family Sharing’s food pantry.

Tickets are $30 in advance and $35 at the door.

Those attending may sample eight soups made by local vendors, including Shully’s Cuisine and Events, Prime Minister, From Scratch Catering, Brandywine, Stilt House, St. Paul’s Fish Market, Out & Out Eatery and Grafton High School’s Advanced Foods class.

Get a little crazy and plant bulbs any way you please

Gardening is full of unnecessary rules, and bulbs suffer more than most plants because of them.

Let’s be honest, in a time when we appreciate instant gratification, it can be difficult to work up the enthusiasm to plant things in fall that we won’t see any action from for many months.

And it’s even more difficult when we are handed a list of rules we’re told we must follow in order to be successful in growing these plants that remain elusive until a spring season we haven’t even begun to envision.

Piping hot casseroles are ideal for fall meals

As the crisp autumn air takes over, casseroles provide a simple way to warm families while offering a tasty meal.

While often used interchangably, there is some debate over the terms casserole and hotdish.

In general, a casserole can serve any function, for example, a main dish, side dish, breakfast or even dessert, and is always made in a casserole dish. A hot dish is a main meal only, as it contains everything needed in a hearty meal — a creamy sauce alongside starch, protein, and vegetable.

Author talk to be held Oct. 25 in Cedarburg

Nickolas Butler, an internationally best-selling and prize-winning author, will  give a talk at the Cedarburg Cultural Center on Wednesday, Oct. 25.

Butler will talk about “Shotgun Lovesongs,” the Cedarburg Reads and Writes 2023 selection, and his other books,  including “Godspeed,” his latest novel.

A reception will be held at 6 p.m. with a cash bar and live music by Nikolás González.

Cedarburg Writes contest winners will be announced at 7 p.m., followed by Butler’s talk from 7:15 to 8 p.m.

Cultural Center to showcase two fall exhibits

Two new exhibits are featured at the Cedarburg Cultural this fall.

“Foursights: The Art of Jonathan Ellis, Bev Richey, Miriam Sushman & Adria Willenson” will be on display from Oct. 21 through Nov. 26.

A wide variety of works will also be for sale by the four artists, who came together a little more than a year ago and launched their collaborative initiative “Foursights,” to showcase their unique styles.

The artwork includes gestural abstract paintings, paintings, mixed media on canvas and mosaics based on the flora and fauna of Wisconsin.

Freezer meal workshop is Oct. 23 in Grafton

The Grafton Senior Center is hosting a freezer meal workshop at 6 p.m. Monday, Oct. 23.

Kristy Markeland will lead the one-hour class at the center and teach how to make meals of four to six servings.

Freezer bags, labels and recipes will be provided. Vegetables and canned goods will be washed and cut.

Participants will use their own proteins and any other ingredients.

Recipes for ranch chicken chili, taco soup, Cabos lime chicken and sweet and tangy street tacos will be taught.

Ozaukee Family Services to host award-winning author Mitchard for Nov. 14 event

Well-known author Jacquelyn Mitchard will be the speaker for the Ozaukee Family Services fall luncheon on Tuesday, Nov. 14.

The event will be held at The Watermark at Shully’s in Thiensville, with registration at 10:30 a.m. and the program at 11 a.m.

  Those attending will receive a copy of Mitchard’s newest book, “A Very Inconvenient Scandal,” which goes on sale Nov. 14. The book is a family drama that explores the emotional consequences of loyalty, deception and jealousy.

One of a kind

Birdhouses, altars, entertainment centers, large-scale Christmas displays and aliens are just some of the pieces Al Buss has created in his 50-year career.

Now, the 74-year-old Grafton artisan is into what he calls “snorts, scanners and short totems.”

“What I like about what I’m doing now is nobody’s doing it,” Buss said.

Hundreds walk for cause in Port
