Ellen Fischer’s children’s book is a real hoot

After being inspired by watching birds in her backyard, Ellen Fischer has spread her writing wings as a book author.

The Port Washington native living in Grafton recently self-published a children’s book, “Fur and Feathers,” conveying a message of celebrating people’s differences while uniting through similarities.

How she would tell her story came from her daily birdwatching routine.

Port Main Street Inc. dedicated its Third Thursday last week to all things Halloween, starting with a costumed pet parade through the central shopping district followed by a Witches Night Out sponsored by downtown businesses. Linsey Howard brought her dog Roxy, who was dressed as a fairy complete with wings, painted nails and a tutu, to the parade.

Honoring first responders at the Capitol

State Rep. Rob Brooks (left) presented Cedarburg Fire Chief Jeff Vahsholtz with a legislative citation honoring him as the First Responder of the Year for the 60th Assembly District at the Capitol Oct. 17. Vahsholtz, who was a Cedarburg police officer from May 1982 until retiring in May 2018, and has been with the Cedarburg Fire Department since May 1978. He was named chief in 2015. “Mr. Vahsholtz’s 40-plus years of service to our communities make him uniquely qualified for this honor,” Brooks said. Rep. Paul Melotik named Carol Barthel as District. 24’s First Responder of the Year.

Community sing to be part of Oct. 28 concert

Musicians Will Branch, Julie Thompson and Craig Siemsen will hold a community sing event as part of the Wisconsin Singer/Songwriter Series on Saturday, Oct. 28.

The 7:30 p.m. concert will be at Unitarian Church North, 13800 N. Port Washington Rd., Mequon.

During the event, the performers will help the audience perform popular songs of the past with them.

Branch has been playing music professionally for more than 30 years, and with his musical partner has performed nearly 2,000 shows in the U.S., Canada, the United Kingdom and Ireland.

Church to host music, gemutlichkeit Oct. 29

St. John Lutheran Church in the Town of Grafton will hold an afternoon of music and gemutlichkeit on Sunday, Oct. 29.

The event, which runs from 2 to 5 p.m., will feature the music of Carol and the Keynotes, a polka band.

Beer, wine, soda, sandwiches and snacks will be available for purchase.

Grants for nonprofit groups available

Nonprofits serving the greater Cedarburg

area can apply for funding through the Greater Cedarburg Foundation’s 2024 grant program beginning Oct. 16.

Program areas that will be considered for funding include projects in arts and culture, education, social services for the public, environment and basic needs.

Initial letters of intent are due by Oct. 31.

Agencies who are invited to submit a full proposal will be notified by Nov. 23.

Reaping the rewards of being a terrible composter

I admit it, I’m a terrible composter. And I think you should be one too.

Last weekend I took on a job I’ve been putting off for months: dealing with the compost. I use a two-bin system, which is a fancy way to suggest that the two side-by-side contained piles of garden refuse that I collect are well-managed.

But nothing could be further from the truth, because other than throwing things in the piles, I pay almost no attention to them.

Don’t be surprised to see a seriously damaged car outside of Grafton High School. No one’s had an accident — it’s just a message set up by the Grafton Leos Club not to text and drive. While the problem of texting and driving is often attributed to young drivers, adults are just as guilty, and the club wants to remind people of this issue. Dogs, lakes among Riveredge topics

Dogs, history and skiing are topics to be addressed at Riveredge Nature Center in the Town of Saukville.

A day for dogs will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct.28.

Riveredge invites dogs and their families to the center once a year to hike the trails to learn why sanctuaries like Riveredge must balance pet access with the needs of local wildlife and plants.

  Leashes are required at all times and pet owners are expected to pick up and dispose of any waste. All people and dogs must remain on designated trails. Maps will be provided.
