Gettin’ down at the Lincoln Village hoedown

Lincoln Village Senior Living in Port Washington held a hoedown Saturday that featured food, music, tractors, hay bales, face painting, cornhole and other family fun activities. Port Yacht Club hosts a picnic in the park

People gathered in Port Washington’s Veterans Park Saturday to enjoy a summer evening and music by Shad Lads at the invitation of the Port Washington Yacht Club (in the background of near left photo), which hosted a picnic for the public in conjunction with the Lake Michigan Clipper Cup sailboat race. On Friday, boats sailed from Muskegon, Mich., to Port Washington in the 37th annual across-the-lake race organized by the yacht clubs in both cities.

Fillmore Fire Dept. to celebrate 100 years

The Fillmore Fire Department will celebrate its 100th anniversary on Saturday, Aug. 19.

A parade will start at noon with a program to follow.

The parade starts and ends at the department, 8485 Trading Post Tr., heads east on Highway H, turns south onto Highway M, then west onto Overlook Pass, north onto Heather Lane, then west onto Stacy Drive, which weaves north back to H and back to the department.

The Goodtime Dutchmen will perform at 3 p.m. and Vintage Groove at 8 p.m.

Fireworks will be held at dusk.

Blood drive to be held in Port on Aug. 21

A blood drive will be held at St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Port Washington from 1 to 6 p.m. Monday, Aug. 21.

The drive is run by the American Red Cross and sponsored by the church.

People may register for a time slot or walk in, but appointments are preferred to help with social distancing.

To register, call (800) 733-2767 or visit www.redcrossblood.org and search for “Port Washington” or redcrossblood.org/RapidPass.

All blood donations are tested for Covid-19 antibodies.

The church is at 1525 N. Grant  St.

Four earn degrees from UW-Stout

Four area students recently graduated from University of Wisconsin-Stout in Menomonie.

Olivia Duero of Fredonia earned a bachelor of fine arts degree in industrial design.

Nick Schmit of Grafton earned a bachelor of science degree in construction.

Kyle Goebel of Port Washington also earned a bachelor of science degree in construction.

Hannah Wozniak of Port earned a bachelor of science degree in  retail merchandising and management.

Two graduate from Carthage College

Two area students were among the more than 620 students who graduated from Carthage College this year.

Rebecca Dowe of Port Washington graduated magna cum laude with a bachelor of arts degree in physics.

Sophia Larsen of Cedar Grove graduated with a bachelor of arts degree in neuroscience.

Twenty-seven earn UW-Madison degrees

Christian Erickson of Belgium received a bachelor of arts degree in English.

Rebecca Plier of Belgium earned a bachelor of arts degree in communication arts.

Kaytlin Kassens of Fredonia received a bachelor of science degree in rehabilitation psychology.

Katelyn Lanctot of Fredonia earned a bachelor of science degrees in computer sciences and psychology.

Grafton’s Jaime Brown earned a doctor of medicime degree from the School of Medicine and Public Health.

Everything’s better with bacon this summer

Celebrate Bacon Lover’s Day on Sunday with a special meal.

Bacon is a tasty meal that goes with just about anything. After all, as the saying goes, everything’s better with bacon.

Bacon can be used in sweet and savory dishes, although it’s probably most commonly used as a breakfast side dish or in the summertime favorite bacon, lettuce and tomato sandwich. When making a BLT, add a little extra flavor by swapping honey mustard, garlic aioli or sriracha mayo for plain old supermarket mayonnaise, or add creaminess and healthy fats with some sliced avocados.

Therapeutic gardens to be discussed Aug. 24

Therapeutic gardening is the topic for the Ozaukee Master Gardeners’ meeting at 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 24.

Landscape architect Mark Dwyer will discuss “Horticulture Therapy: Wellness in the Garden” during the online session, held via Zoom.

Dwyer will discuss therapeutic gardening, which is defined as a plant-dominated environment purposefully designed to facilitate interaction with the healing elements of nature.

He will share examples of designs, features and plantings associated with therapeutic gardens he’s been involved with in recent years.

Port library now offers Ancestry.com

Amateur genealogists  have another tool in their box of resources to investigate the past — the Niederkorn Library in Port Washington has a subscription to Ancestry.com that’s open to the public.

“What you can do with it is really cool,” Adult Services Librarian Alyssa Strzyzewski said.  “There are tons of collections you can access.”

Those collections include such things as census, immigration and military records, newspaper obituaries, wedding announcements and yearbooks, she said.
