The weather led to lower participation than last year, but the annual Port Washington Lions Club Fish Derby last weekend still drew anglers from four states, including Florida.
Jesse Frank of Saukville took home the grand prize, drawn from the winners in each of five categories. Frank caught an 11.7-pound rainbow trout and took home $917, based on an 80% payout of the $25 entry ticket sales.
FISH DERBY WINNERS s1073017057 4CBesides Frank, first-place winners who each took home $229.25 were Larry Lorenz of Port Washington, 13.2-pound lake trout; Joe Dezoute of Oostburg, 21-pound chinook salmon; Scott Nothem of West Bend, 9.7-pound coho salmon; and Terry Placzek of West Bend, 7.4-pound brown trout.
A total of 131 anglers competed, down from 170 least year due to water temperature, high waves and winds. Northeast winds caused waves of more than six feet.
The fish total came to 171 for the two-day event, down from 274 last year and 444 in 2015. The breakdown was 54 rainbow trout, 44 coho salmon, 43 chinook salmon, 25 lake trout and three brown trout.
Chinooks were down but coho, rainbow and lake trout were up from last year.
