Pair of shutout wins leaves Port girls on top at Lutheran soccer quad

The Port Washington girls’ soccer team sneaked over the .500 mark for the first time this season, thanks to a three-game winning streak and tournament title.

The Pirates beat West Bend West, 2-0, in the championship final of the Kettle Moraine Lutheran Quad last Saturday.

The game was a rematch of an early season battle between the teams that ended in a scoreless tie.

PORT SOCCER TEAM 4CJunior midfielder Lydie Krueger scored in the fifth minute on an assist from senior midfielder Brianna Schnell. Junior forward Megan Barian netted an insurance goal in the opening minute of the second half off a pass from Schnell.

In a 2-0 win over host Lutheran in the tournament semifinals, Krueger scored “off a nice lay-off pass by Barian” in the third minute, Port coach Eric Liebergen said.

In the 33rd minute, senior forward Meghan VandeBoom scored with an assist from Barian.

KML got a penalty kick in the second half, but sophomore goalie Kaytlin Kassens made a save to preserve the shutout.

“We were able to score early, and it seemed to inspire us,” Liebergen said of the tournament.

“I loved our energy level and our ability to move the ball. All goals were assisted at the tourney, which is pretty cool.

Offensively, we are finding one another and creating quality looks at the goal.”

On May 11, Port knocked off Beaver Dam, 1-0, in a nonconference game.

Barian scored in the first half on an assist from junior midfielder Payton Hurley.

“We had multiple looks at goal but couldn’t capitalize other than the one,” Liebergen said.

The three wins improved the Pirates to 7-6-2 overall, which includes a 1-3-1 record in the North Shore Conference.

This week, the Pirates were scheduled to play at  Germantown (0-4 NSC) on Thursday. On May 23, Port will  host Nicolet (0-3-1).
