Senior’s hat-trick work leads CG-Belgium girls to lopsided Big East victories

The Lady Rockets found their offense and the back of the net 17 times in a pair of Big East Conference soccer games last week.

Cedar Grove-Belgium defeated Random Lake on the road, 9-1, on April 13 after drubbing Sheboygan Lutheran, 8-0, two days earlier.

“Despite the final result of 9-1, we were not as efficient and effective as we were against Sheboygan Lutheran,” Rockets coach Elias Garza said.

“Credit to Random Lake for their efforts and providing resistance and playing hard to the final whistle.”

Cedar Grove-Belgium senior Faith Buechler scored three times for her second straight game, and Bares netted two goals for the second time in as many contests.

Jessica Rose scored twice, and Bailey Cooney and Amanda Meerdink each added one goal.

The Rockets got assists from Bares, Rose, Buechler and Autumn Beutel.

Cedar Grove-Belgium took a 4-0 lead into halftime. That allowed Garza to use some of his bench.

“More players would be introduced after half to help alleviate the hardship of having played three games in four days,” he said.

Against Lutheran, the Rockets again spread the scoring, taking a 5-0 lead by half.

Buechler scored three times and Bares twice. Beutel, Laura Kerwin and Carissa Augustiniak each netted one score.

Rose, Bares, Beutel and Amy TenHaken had assists.

“We were productive and efficient tonight. A plethora of players were able to see the pitch, which is beneficial particularly for the younger players,” Garza said.

The final tally could have been worse for the Crusaders. Lutheran keeper Naomi Gruben made 15 saves.

On April 10, the Rockets battled Howards Grove to a 3-3 tie, but the weather may have edged both teams.

“Mother Nature was making things difficult for the players, which would be a understatement,” Garza said.

“Strong winds, heavy rain and cold temperatures were prominent throughout the game.”

The Tigers struck first, but Beutel evened the game with an assist from Rose.

A few minutes later, Abby Krause found Beutel for the go-ahead score, and the Rockets had a 2-1 halftime lead.

The Tigers scored in the 75th minute and again two minutes later to take a 3-2 lead.

With a minute and a half to play, Beutel scored her third goal on a corner kick from Bares to tie the game.

“The girls would not give up,” Garza said.

This week, the Rockets (2-0-1 in the conference and 2-1-1 overall) were scheduled to play Big East foe Sheboygan Christian on Tuesday and host rival Ozaukee at 6 p.m. Thursday.

They host Big East opponent Kohler on Tuesday, Aug. 25, and play at Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah on Thursday, April 27.
