A fast start carried the Grafton softball team to a 6-1 win over Cedarburg in a North Shore Conference game Monday.

The host Black Hawks scored four times in the first inning and maintained that lead until the sixth, when they added two runs.

Cedarburg averted a shutout by scoring in the seventh.

The Bulldogs won the hit battle, 9-8, but couldn’t match the offensive punch of Grafton, which got two RBI apiece from Kaitlyn Brandenburg and Casey Assmann.

Amber Tanski and Kim Schacht each went 2-for-4 for the Hawks. Brandenburg and Assmann were both 1-for-4 with doubles.

Nicole Guhl and Rebecca Houdek had two hits apiece for Cedarburg.

Junior pitcher Aly Bartel threw a complete game for the win. She struck out two and walked none.

Cedarburg starter Erin Livingston also went the distance. She walked six and struck out one.

The win improved Grafton’s third-place league record to 5-3. Cedarburg fell to 2-7.
