Senior’s 3rd-place finish sets pace for Black Hawks in On the Water tournament
Alex Marshall continued to set the pace for the Grafton High School wrestling team at the annual Lourdes On the Water Classic in Oshkosh last weekend.
The senior, who was the Black Hawks’ lone state qualifier last season, turned in their top tournament finish by placing third in the 220-pound weight class.
After receiving a first-round bye, Marshall pinned his next three opponents before being pinned by undefeated Dallas Wanta of West Allis Hale in the semifinals. Wanta (20-0) scored a fall in 5 minutes, 2 seconds.
Marshall bounced back to win his last two matches, including a 4:20 pin of Coleman’s C.J. Pillath and a 7-0 decision over Kimberly’s Drew Tomasovic in the third-place final.
The tournament left Marshall with a 17-3 season record.
Grafton scored 75 points, good for 33rd place in the 59-team field. Coleman won the team title with 321.5 points, 3.5 more than Wittenberg-Birnamwood.
Rounding out the top five were Random Lake (293.5), Cedarburg (270.5) and Oshkosh West (237).
No other Grafton wrestler placed in the tournament, but three Hawks — Arturo Duran (106), Kevin Taylor (145) and Ian Olivas — each had winning records.
Duran, a sophomore, went 4-2, winning twice by pin and twice by decision. He outlasted Lomira’s Tyler Garriety, 7-5, in the fourth round of the consolation bracket before being pinned in his final match by Freedom’s Mitch Garvey in 1:46.
Duran has a 14-5 season record.
Taylor, a senior, had a 3-2 tournament record. He won his first match by pin but lost to Chilton’s Austin Keuler, 9-4, in the second round.
Taylor then won twice by decision, including a 7-0 victory over Lourdes Academy’s Corey Beecher, before losing, 5-3, to Oshkosh West’s Isaiah Merrill.
The tournament left Taylor with a 7-4 season mark.
Olivas, a senior, scored a first-round pin but was edged, 2-1, by West Bend West’s Bryce Schmidt in the second round. Olivas then won twice by pin before losing, 8-2, to Ripon’s Brady Jacobson.
Olivas has an 8-4 season record.
Going 2-2 in the tournament for Grafton were Jason Gustafson (138) and Tommy Makela (152).
The Hawks’ next meet will be the Thunderbird Classic in Baraboo on Saturday, Jan. 11.
