Woolf leads trio of boys, White advances for girls in Division 2 cross country
There will be no shortage of Grafton runners at this weekend’s WIAA Division 2 state cross-country meet.
Three boys and one girl will represent the Black Hawks after turning in qualifying performances at the Shorewood Sectional last Friday.
In the boys’ 5,000-meter race at Kern Park, Grafton’s state-worthy finishers were senior Jacob Woolf (sixth place in 16 minutes, 48 seconds), junior Alec Weinhold (seventh in 16:51) and sophomore Parker White (eighth in 16:51).
Senior Elise White advanced for the Grafton girls with a 4,000-meter time of 15:56, good for seventh place.
“It was definitely a good meet for us,” Hawks coach Kevin Kriegel said. “To have four runners get through to state in a tough sectional like that is great.”
The Grafton boys were a solid third in the 10-team standings with 60 points, trailing only state powers Wisconsin Lutheran (35) and Shorewood (48).
Woolf earned his second straight trip to state after placing 25th in the Division 2 final last year.
The Hawks’ other scoring finishers Friday were Max Jensen in 19th (17:36) and Erick Huertas in 20th (17:40), followed by Patrick Tobianski in 35th (18:28) and Joe Docter in 36th (18:29).
“The boys ran well. Our fourth and fifth runners were a little off the pace, but with teams like Wisconsin Lutheran and Shorewood in the meet, there wasn’t much we could do,” Kriegel said.
The meet marked the first time Kriegel has had his boys’ team qualify as many as three runners for state.
Rounding out the field were Whitnall in fourth with 143 points, followed by University School (151), Kettle Moraine Lutheran (153), Milwaukee Lutheran (172), New Berlin West (174), Thomas More (273) and St. Anthony (309).
The boys’ individual champion was Wisconsin Lutheran’s Eric Brown (15:54).
In the girls’ meet, Grafton placed fifth with 135 points. Shorewood won the team title with 37 points, followed in the top four by Wisconsin Lutheran (37), New Berlin West (79) and Whitnall (100).
Besides White, who earned her first state trip, the Hawks got scoring finishes from Chloe Lichosik in 30th (17:13), Jeni Woolf in 31st (17:15), Sara Zimmermann in 32nd (17:16) and Rachel Ruona in 35th (17:35).
Also for Grafton, Monica Corner was 40th (18:06) and Ella Aspenson was 43rd (18:20).
“Elise has worked hard all season. It’s been one of her goals to get to state, and she deserves it,” Kriegel said.
Shorewood’s Morgan Florsheim won the girls’ individual title in 14:54.
The state meet will be held Saturday at The Ridges Golf Course in Wisconsin Rapids. In Division 2, the girls’ race starts at 12:05 p.m., followed by the boys’ race at 1:50 p.m.
